There is a European snobbery with being able to speak several languages--thus the Bush multi-lingual statement. If Americans were exposed to multiple languages throughout their lives like Europeans, most Americans would be multi-lingual too. Unless you live in South Florida, Texas, or Southern California all you hear is English...whether on radio, television or wherever. Europeans just don't understand that.

I love it when presidents show they're human and don't go from script.
About the only time I really liked Clinton was when he showed up on a radio station call-in to do a political plug, and the hostess kept him on for a long time talking about policy. When she mentioned that BS we all know about us killing kids in Iraq with the sanctions, he just went off on her and it was wonderful. A moment of natural clarity in an otherwise poorly scripted presidency.

Have you seen this one?

Turning to Mr. Chirac, he added in French: "And, Mr. President, would you maybe comment on that?" What a pompus ass
Chirac understands English
It's worse than that. If Chirac didn't understand English, how would he know on what he was being asked to comment?
Beyond arrogance, into stupidity.

"I'm impressed que bueno," ... "Now I'm literate in two languages."
THAT is Barbara Bush's son - puncturing this eurosnob's bubble with a very sharp wit.

Bush should cut off access to some of these "high-profile" losers and see how quickly their tune changes.

I actually transcribed this clod Gregory's question in French at my part-time transcribing job yesterday. However, I did not get to hear Bush's answer (a few of us type segments, and my tape ran out just after Gregory finished his question.)
"Monsieur le président, voudriez vous ajouter vos sentiments...?" I was proud of getting the French, especially since Gregory's pronunciation was not terribly clear. But my editor excised the French words, and just left in a notation that Gregory asked the question in French, followed by the translator's translation.

Let's hope Chirac felt insulted over the suggestion that his English might be limited.
Actually, I believe Chirac studied in this country, so his English is naturally fluent. I remember hearing him speak English when he was in Washington right after 9/11. He said that the French call Rudy Giuliani "Mayor Without Fear." I was wondering if the French for that is "Maire Sans-Peur," which I think has a ring to it.

I agree.
And Gregory seems more eager than most to portray GW in a bad light.
I recall him reporting on some of Bush's statements with incredulous expressions on his face, and a tone that was clearly designed to discredit Bush.
He impresses me as a real Clymer.

Has anyone noticed that Gregory has seemed to revel in trying to embarrass Dubya ever since the election coverage?
Gregory thinks he's Sam Donaldson Junior, except he is the gay version of Donaldson.

he is the gay version of Donaldson. Oy gevalt. A visual I did not need.
