Veto Vermont Vacations! We tried to explain to some B&B operators why we were not travelling to VT as planned this fall. We could not believe the replies! I guess if you disagree with the libs and would like Leahy to fulfill his constitutional duties---give the judicial nominees a hearing and then a vote---they consider you a sicko!

For my money, Vermont doesn't have anything that Upstate New York, New Hampshire, or Maine doesn’t have. Well, there are the left wing politics and leftover 60's commune types, I guess that’s something.

Wow, by the vitriolic tone, you must be stuck in the Southern Denton County, Texas that you describe. It sounds like you are the one that needs to get out and enjoy the world.

For your information, I have been to San Francisco - once. It has its beautiful spots, but as my eyes were being filled with the beauty, my stomach was being turned by the personal behavior of fellow cable car riders: let your imagination run.

I enjoy my life, I just have certain ideas that I choose to follow, I follow my own logic, and it does not always take me where your shallow interpretation of it did.

Good luck getting out of Texas!

With the "Vermont carry" laws, at least you don't have to worry about getting mugged.

Yes, I live in the southern part of Denton County, TX (Dick Armey's district). As far as the Dallas-Ft. Worth area go, it is Heaven on Earth. You don't have to worry about being mugged, killed, or your wife raped when you leave for a week's worth of work. The 'huddled masses' seemed to have missed the area, as almost everyone here is a citizen, and gives a rat's ass about America.

It is a near perfect suburban environment, and a nice place to raise children. It is not a tourist destination.

Right now, I am on the beach in Kauai, which is infested from tip-to-toe with folks that still have 1969 calendars on their walls. Marin County, California is probably the only place in America which has more libs per capita.

Would I live here? Absolutely! Would I raise kids here? NFW!

My point with my response was that the local politics are not the only criteria for determining a vacation spot. There are myths which perpetuate on FR which make me sick. One of them is that Vermont catagorically sucks, because of Bernie Sanders, and Texas is a conservative shangrila. I've got news about Texas - it has many good things for conservatives, but there are a LOT of liberals here, and they are not all in Austin. My taxes go up every year, yet my house value is declining. The schools eat up a monster portion of my monthly budget, and suck every bit as bad as 'liberal' states' schools. We have God hating hedonists in Texas, just like everywhere else.

On most conservatives signature issue, gun control, I believe Vermont leads Texas in that regard. I believe it is the only place in Amerika that has uncontested conceal-carry. Liberal Washington has less restrictions on conceal-carry than Texas.

Which state produced Calvin Coolidge, and which one produced LBJ?

Enjoy - I like where I live. I just would not choose it as a vacation destination, even if it is very conservative. Key West, P-town, Hanalei, San Francisco, and Aspen all have miserable politics, and are wonderful to visit.

Most but not all folks who spend some vacation time in San Francisco would agree with your statements concerning the city, but take it from a Connecticut yankee who made the mistake of moving here fourteen years ago, This place is the center of all the dysfunction in the universe!! An ongoing freakshow in a beautiful geographic setting will always ensure that the tourists keep coming but if you want to do something right, you don't come to San Francisco specifically and California in general. I've been trying to get back to the east coast now for some time but the job markets in my field have dried up somewhat so here I stay for the time being. I even considered Burlington, Vt. as a new home but discovered after a little research that Burlington is trying to capture the title of San Francisco of the east coast. The best things about California will always be the things that have nothing to do with people and that would be the weather and the geography. You can keep the rest.

There is another bastion of clear thinking, freedom loving folks who support a Vermont free market think tank: Ethan Allen Institute which currently has over 600 dues paying members.

Check out their website. Use search engine for Ethan Allen Institute. Take a look at some of their policy papers and mission statement. I'm some of their members and directors, must, at times, feel like they are at the Alamo!

Yes, I agree.

I've communicated with John McClaughry a few times and find him to be a solid conservative thinker.

As you may know, he and his wife are campaigning for 'school choice' in Vermont and getting trashed, as expected, by the VT NEA.

Talk about 2-faced. Angelo Dorta, leader of the VT NEA, and a major mouthpiece against choice just sent his kid to Rice HS, A PRIVATE, PAROCHIAL SCHOOL in Burlington.

When asked by the press about this move, he would only say "it's a private family matter."

Yeah...right, Dorka!
