PAPER: Rock Creek Park Predator Interviewed by Police Investigating Levy Death Thu May 23 2002 12:52:01 ET

D.C. Metropolitan Police Department officials investigating the death of Washington intern Chandra Levy have interviewed a man serving a 10-year prison sentence for attacking two women in Rock Creek Park last year, ROLL CALL DAILY is planning to report on Thursday.

MORE

D.C. Metro Police investigators have "talked to" Ingmar Guandeque, who was arrested in July 2001 after attacking two females (one in May and one in July) who were jogging along the Broad Branch trail in Rock Creek Park. Levy's decomposed body was found Wednesday along the Broad Branch trail in a heavily wooded area.

A second official close to the Levy investigation said that while Guandeque was interviewed after Levy's disappearance last year, investigators are now taking a closer look at him since the intern's body was discovered.

"Clearly there are some coincidences and links -- just because of the proximity of where he [committed his crimes]," said a source close to the investigation.

ROLL CALL's Amy Keller reports: Guandeque, who lived on the 1400 block of Somerset Place Northwest, was arrested last summer and sentenced in February 2002 to two concurrent terms of 10 years' imprisonment for a pair of assaults of female joggers in the Broad Branch section of the park.

The first attack occurred in mid-May 2001, at 6:30 p.m., about two weeks after Levy disappeared. In that case, Guandeque came upon an unnamed female jogger, attacking her from behind while brandishing a knife.

Ok I donated. The coroner said murder so I lost the bet. The odds were with me but the coroner didn't go the Vince Foster route. Here's to Chandra and Free Republic. ;)

Oh, no, SarahW, I do get it, and you seem to be the primary "Condit-didn't-do-it" apologist on FR. Your scenario conveniently leaves out all the suspicious evidence, like the fact that the last thing on Levy's computer was a Mapquest map of the Rock Creek Park area, the fact that dogs lost her scent immediately outside her front door, (suggesting she was picked up by car or motorcycle), and the assumption that she just had to go jogging that particular night. Your scenario, from a later thread, that Guandeque went through a "learning curve" by killing Levy in the first assault, and going on to two unsuccessful assaults following hers, is ridiculous in the extreme. The local DC police, inept as they seem to be, probably got it right this one time, when they discounted him from being Levy's likely assailant prior to the assaults he was convicted of.

Condit apologist?!! Bwaahahahhhahahhahah HAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHH.ahahhahhahhah

I'm not "leaving out" any of those things, in the first place, and in the second place, Condit gets no get out of jail free card from me.

I've said over and over ad nauseum that Chandra was going to meet someone, and that someone was probably Condit.

You probably ought to read some of my posts on that subject, but I'm too tired to go exhaustively through what is really very simple. Ask yourself - WWGD if Chandra had been abducted? WOuld he alert anyone? be fullsome with her parents? Would he tell the whole stinking story to the police? No, he would pretend he wasn't involved with her. Distance himself as much as possible. Characterize the relationship in the "emergency" temrs he had already cooked up.

I think Ingmars the man. Condits the SOB. I will be more than pleasantly surprised to be proved wrong.

Gary's second on my list, but not a distant second.

WHy is it ridiculous in the extreme to think Guandeque might not be batting 1000 at 20? Even Ted Bundy after years of practice had girls frighten him off, and escape his grasp.

What I find ridiculous in the Ingmar did it scenario is that Chandra Levy gets lured to, or picked up and taken to Rock Creek Park, ostensibly to meet Condit, presumably to get roughed up, or to get shut up permanently in case she proved to be uncooperative. And what happens instead? She gets accosted, assaulted , killed and buried by a serial predator, buried so well she isn't discovered for a year. The serial predator inadvertently winds up doing the dirty work we're assuming someone else may have planned to do on Condit's behalf. That's a kind of negative serendipity that happens about as often as I've won the lottery. It's the extreme unlikeliness of such a scenario that I have the most trouble with. That, and the too-convenient fall guy,( who was initially rejected as a suspect) taking ALL the heat off Condit, if that's the scenario that the DC Police now have to "make happen".

Speak for yourself about the presumption that Condit was going to "rough her up" (or have her roughed up). I think they were meeting away from his apartment b/c his wife was in town.

I guess we both have our presumptions, and our scenarios unfold from that point. You could be right. I'd say "Time will tell", but it probably won't.
