PAPER: Rock Creek Park Predator Interviewed by Police Investigating Levy Death Thu May 23 2002 12:52:01 ET

D.C. Metropolitan Police Department officials investigating the death of Washington intern Chandra Levy have interviewed a man serving a 10-year prison sentence for attacking two women in Rock Creek Park last year, ROLL CALL DAILY is planning to report on Thursday.

D.C. Metro Police investigators have "talked to" Ingmar Guandeque, who was arrested in July 2001 after attacking two females (one in May and one in July) who were jogging along the Broad Branch trail in Rock Creek Park. Levy's decomposed body was found Wednesday along the Broad Branch trail in a heavily wooded area.

A second official close to the Levy investigation said that while Guandeque was interviewed after Levy's disappearance last year, investigators are now taking a closer look at him since the intern's body was discovered.

"Clearly there are some coincidences and links -- just because of the proximity of where he [committed his crimes]," said a source close to the investigation.

ROLL CALL's Amy Keller reports: Guandeque, who lived on the 1400 block of Somerset Place Northwest, was arrested last summer and sentenced in February 2002 to two concurrent terms of 10 years' imprisonment for a pair of assaults of female joggers in the Broad Branch section of the park.

The first attack occurred in mid-May 2001, at 6:30 p.m., about two weeks after Levy disappeared. In that case, Guandeque came upon an unnamed female jogger, attacking her from behind while brandishing a knife.

"Talking with Gary about a month ago, [I said] if this was the work of a serial killer, you might find that Chandra would turn up sometime in May." Geragos said the prediction was based on "prior findings" and did not explain further.

I caught that howler, myself. The only adjective that does justice to this oily, slimy pile of nonsense is, Clintonesque.

Though somehow I think Markie would see that as a complement, not a badge of dishonor.

Just go back to the interview Mark Geragoes gave Larry King last night, where he deliberately LIED about what his private Investigators told him concerning the fact that Chandra's body should surface in May, because it fit the pattern of a Serial Killer who got the other two girls!

They had a LOT of bad weather, heavy rains and tornadoes. That might be the reason why this idiot lawyer of his "predicted" she would be found.

I would just love to know what "prior findings" he is talking about. How the heck would he know that she would be found in May? The more this guy opens his mouth, the more trouble Condit gets himself into.

But what are the odds that this girl, who had looked up information on Gary Condit's website, then Klingle mansion, then went to the park just happened to be the only victim that ever got killed by him? If that's what happened, then she is the one with the really bad luck.

A little better if hr routine included a daily workout and her membership ended April 30, and this was May 1.

The thing that nags me the most about this is Gary's disposal of the watch case. The second thing that bugs me is it is quite possible she intended to "kill two birds" by meeting Gary and by jogging. If they met and Gary left while she went on to jog, his denial about knowing her might of cost her her life if the she was still alive after the attack.

She still did not have her travel plans....so, she was packed, probably with not much to do, and went out for a walk --probably not a jog, since she had a backpack and, if on foot, was going to walk 4-6 miles. She had cancelled her membership the day before, so she was "stuck" being outside for her exercise.

And the dogs lost her scent at the curb because????

Anyone know what time her ticket departures were for?

Well, that's really strange, because FNC, CNN and MSNBC have been reporting all day that a "ring" with Chandra Levy's initials carved into it was found. Now how would they know that? These two clowns better get their acts together.

Will be interesting to see if Chandra's fingerprints show up on the walkman type device in places where her fingerprints should be if it is hers or if it was planted with the body to point to the "Walkman" preditor......had not heard of a missing "walkman" of Chandra's prior to yesterday.

I certainly hope the police find this out and ask him to elaborate!! Otherwise he sounds suspicious himself.

All I know is what I heard out of the assistant chief's mouth.He was asked by Shep if there was jewelry or keys found and he said"NO KEYS, NO JEWELRY".I know some on this board do not believe anything that comes out of the mouths of law enforcement---I'm not one of them.I believe police over talking heads on TV any day!!

Oh, I see what you mean about her jogging in that park. That makes sense. But is it possible that HE suggested it to her? Who knows...maybe she really WAS pregnant and this was going to be a "talk" between the two of them. Now we'll never know if she was pregnant. Very strange that his lawyer predicted that she would be found in "May".

Good point, I just find it hard to think of any situation wherein a third-rate mediocrity like Condit could act "crafty" under the pressure and stress he was under in planning this heinous crime.

But it's not outside the realm of possibility that he became more focused and composed. Unlikely, though, IMO, after having watched the twit in the Chung interview, etc.

Well, I don't doubt you, but the history of these two guys --Ramsey and Gainer-are just like that..they cross each other almost everytime they have opened their mouths on this case. Don't take it personally. :-) FNC even had a former FBI profiler on who was talking about the sweatshirt they found and the ring...and that's probably why Cheif Ramsey was so quick to call the Levy's and let their investigators know that they "might have their woman".

To me, the whole pattern fits exactly how I think a third-rate blow-dried freak Congressman like Condit would carry out his killing.

There are two major problems with your theory. The first is that you assume Chandra had a date with Condit. This is just your personal opinion...it has no basis in fact.

Second, you incorrectly assume a hitman would work in a public park and leave the evidence behind. Highly unlikely.

You also mention an M.O. in your post, but don't bother to post why killing Chandra would be beneficial to Condit. It seems that the net effect of her murder for him was to expose their affair and lose his house seat.

I have no idea what that idiot Geragos was talking about. I think he was talking about Joyce Chung, who, after a several month long search, was found in May. In a river bed. And apparently the other one was found in May, if you believe him, a dubious proposition.

But so what? The time the cops get around to finding the body gives you absolutely no hint whatsoever that you're talking about the same perp, the same MO, anything. It indicates no pattern at all.

Geragos obviously has had success pulling false analogies and sob stories over on the American booboisie before, but this one's off the charts.

The real howler was how he, all oily-like, said the pattern was something "his investigators" mentioned. That was classic.
