Actually, I suspect this is a sympathy play.

This guy has lied through his teeth for years and his carefully constructed life of falsehood has come crashing down around his ears.

His friends are probably abandoning him. His book is being trashed everywhere. His future as a journalist is totally kaput.

Oh what to do??? Hey, I know! I'll fake a nervous breakdown and check into a sanitorium for a rest. Everyone will feel sorry for me and forget what a sleasebag I am....

Sorry. Even if his breakdown is real, he gets no sympathy from me.
