What Happened To SafeWeb.com

Posted on 05/16/2002 12:23:26 PM PDT by Mean Spirited Conservative

There used to be a web security system called SafeWeb. It was free and allowed you to browse the internet invisibly, without allowing your computer and URL to be traced. It was free. Now it is no longer available, except it seems, to large customers and/or companies. Does anyone know of a similar service is available and how one would go about using it?

It appears that they are still there but I don't see anything free there. In addition, there is some hardware involved.

I copied this little statement off their website. A Secure Extranet in Less than an Hour! Our secure extranet appliance (SEA) is quick to install, simple to use and easy to manage.

There used to be a surfanon.com started by an Indian kid and bought out by some company (I guess it became another dot bomb). Doing a Google search brought me to this site. Seems to allow you to select from a menu of anonymizer sites.

You would be even LESS safe when browsing the web thru a proxy server than just browsing normally, because when you go through a proxy the owner of the proxy can see everything you do. When you just browse normally, there is really very little you have to worry about, even if someone does have your ip. If you're still worried, get a firewall. ZoneAlarm and Black Ice are the easiest to use.

. . . the owner of the proxy can see everything you do . . .

Not with JAP. All requests are encrypted with multiple layers of encryption and are bounced around a cluster of several anon proxy servers. It's not foolproof, but it's pretty darned good -- and it's free.

The marvels of Technology...If I got anymore anonymous than I already am, I'd have to sew labels in my BVD'S to know who I was each morn! Oh well, at least Big Brother can tell me.

Son of Jorel??? Puhlease! In all seriousness, I was tempted to buy a box of Spiderman cereal today, just for the food coloring... Might be good trace minerals in em, who knows?

Does JAP slow down your computer? Some of these conduits I've used slow you down.

Yes, it definitely slows things down, some days quite a bit. Other days it's hardly noticeable.
