Stop Hollings and the CBDTPA

Do you enjoy burning mix CD's from you personal collection? Do you own an MP3 player and rip tracks to listen to? Do you find it convenient to videotape your favorite shows and movies? Sen Fritz (Foghorn Leghorn) Hollings has proposed a bill that would make it a federal crime to do any of those things. You'd be subject to fines and possible imprisonment if it passes.

I'm hardly a pinko who thinks that music should be free, but I find it outrageous that the government wants to tell me that I can't burn CD's I've bought and paid for to my iPod for my own personal use. Media companies should make a profit, but not at the expense of individual liberty, and the Fair Use Doctrine, which has been well settled law for decades. Duplicating copyrighted works for personal, non-commerical use is LEGAL, and should remain so.

Please follow the link to http://digitalconsumer.org to find out more information about the CBDTPA, and how to stop Hollings (the senator from Disney) and his insidious bill.

My understanding on the status of this bill is that Leahy of Vermont, who chairs the Committee that would hold hearings on it is opposed to it and said he wouldn't consider the bill this session. And in the House Dick Armey said forget it there as well. So at least for now this un-American attempt to stop consumers from using their purchased music for personal reasons however they want isn't going anywhere. But we'll still need to let Congress and the Senate know where to stuff Hollings and his bill.
