China slams US Congress
Taipei Times ^ | Friday, May 10th, 2002

China reacted sharply yesterday to a move by pro-Taiwan members of the US Congress to invite President Chen Shui-bian (³¯¤ô«ó) to Washington. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan (¤Õ¬u) said yesterday that an invitation would contradict official US backing for the "one China" principle. "The position of the Chinese government on this question is very clear: There are three joint communiques between China and the United States, and US leaders have repeated for many times that they will honor the one-China principle," he said.

I am tired of China telling the US what to do.

Not only should the US invite Chen to Washington DC, President Bush should visit Taipei.

Does President Bush support this "One-China" policy? I hadn't heard anything about this from him.

Yes, President Bush said he supported the "One-China" policy. The Chinese leadership makes a point to get US officials to reaffirm the "One-China" policy at every meeting.

When President Bush went to China, he said he supported the policy but he refused to repeat the "3 No's" like Clinton did on his trip there. President Bush also reaffirmed the policy on Hu's trip here last week.

The "3 Communiques", which is the foundataion of US-China relalations, is not a treaty. A treaty like those communiques would never have been ratified. On the other hand, "The Taiwan Relations Act" is a law that was passed by Congress and signed by the President. It states the US will provide Taiwan enough military hardware to defend themselves.

Everybody in the world knows there are two Chinas. The "One-China" illusion has only helped to isolate Taiwan diplomatically. Even China knows the reality of two Chians or they wouldn't be going around trying to get every nation to repeat the "One-China" mantra.

I don't think it would really be a good idea to nuke China if they complain about President Chen visiting Washington DC. Nevertheless, I agree with your sentiments.

The United States should have offical relations with both Mainland China and Taiwan. If China gets mad and breaks relations with the US, so be it. I doubt China would cancel all contact with the United States. If China even thinks about attacking the US over Taiwan, just remind them to see what happened to other countries that tried to mess with us: Germany, Japan, Italy, Iraq, USSR.

Memo

To: Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense
From: hchutch
Subject: ChiComs

1. Suggest we order all attack submarines to initiate two active pings on ChiCom surface vessels and submarines at 1800 EDT tomorrow evening.

2. This should shut the punks up.

Naw, just have 'em each fire a water slug. By the time the Chicoms finish changing their drawers, our subs will be LONG gone.

Do not recommend water slugs. Could be mistaken as firing a warshot. No need for an international-scale Diallo incident.

Option selected is very similar to one we pulled on the Russians a while back. Word has it it took the starch out of them for a while.

Two China's? Throughout history there have been a heck of a lot more than two...at least by political 'zhong guo' definitions...Having two equal "Chinas" existing side by side is nothing new... it has happened numerous times, and is happening now...
