[Swedish FM] Ms Lindh: We will not take part [in a deal to solve the church of Nativity stand-off]

Sweden will not take part in a deal to solve the crisis around the church of Nativity in Bethlehem. The governement does not want to receive any of the 13 Palestinian ”wanted terrorists” who are in the church, says foreign minister Anna Lindh.

Everything seemed ”in principle” ready for a deal so that Israel’s five week long siege of the church of Nativity could be lifted. Ariel Sharon and Yassir Arafat had agreed that the 13 Palestinian militia men should be exiled, 26 men should be tried in a Palestinian court in Gaza, and the rest of the almost 200 people in the church – armed men and civilians, monks and priests, foreign ”pece activists”, among the latter, two swedes – should be free to return home.

It was intended that Italy should take care of the 13 [wanted men], but the Italians, who had not received a request, said no to the ”terrorists”. Tonight Greece and Jordan were mentioned as alternative hosts, but nothing was decided.

In any case, no help is to be expected from Sweden. ”In the present situation we do not want to receive a group of people about whom we do not have any information”, says Anna Lindh, who thinks there may be individuals who are ”dangerous” among them, she says to the TT-news agency.

Among the 13 [terrorists] in the church are Palestinians who have been accused of participating in suicide attacks killing at least 15 people, according to Reuters:

Mohammed Said Saleh – member of the al-Aqsa-brigade; accused of two suicide attacks in Jerusalem killing 12 people; Nidal Abu Galif suspected of to have sent two suicide bombers to the central bus station in Jerusalem; Aziz Jubran, member of Hamas and suspected of assisting Hamud; Ibrahim Musa Abayat, leader of a Fatah-cell, suspected of murdering three people, Ismail Hamdan, Fatah-activist, suspected of murdering three pepole.

Ms Lindh started her political career as leader of the Social Democratic Youths almost always dressed in a "Palestine scarf", always deploring the awful Israelis and applauding the "brave Palestinian freedomfighters". Her career has steadily advanced and she is now Swedish Foreign Minister, but her views has not markedly changed. But when things gets too close to home....

Hypocricy galore!

A reasonable explanation. I wonder if she is so careful when Israeli atrocities are alleged.

Actually, she has plenty of information. Israel says they're the hardcore terrorists. They invaded a church as a plan. What's not to know?

The short answer to your question is: no!

She was very upset about the Israeli massacre in Jenin, as was of course the whole Swedish media, cultural, and political elite ("elite" used in a very "loose" sense).

"Israel’s five week long siege of the church of Nativity"

Wouldn't it be more accurate to say "terrorist's 5-week occupation and kidnapping of neutral hostages"?

I wonder how the Saudis would react if a group of Jewish terrorists who had been murdering innocent children took over the Kaaba in Mecca and held a group of Imams hostage? I assume they would be negotiating to let most of them live free in Sweden.

The Swedes are smart to not take in Palestinians.

With all this "You're with us, or against us" talk, if they harbor Palestinian terrorists, 95% of Free Republic will be demanding that we nuke Stockholm.
