May 3, 2002 -- WASHINGTON - A force of 1,000 British combat troops has begun a major new operation in southeastern Afghanistan, as U.S.-backed coalition forces appear to be readying for a decisive battle against Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda terror army.

The mission, dubbed "Operation Snipe," is concentrating on an undisclosed area where an American-led contingent is massing near the Pakistan border.

U.S. intelligence agencies have had new reports that bin Laden is hiding out in tribal areas, although they say they have been unable to verify the reports.

The British operation, which has been ongoing since Monday, will be supported by American Apache helicopters, A-10 Warthog attack jets and U.S. Special Forces commandos, U.S. and British military officials said yesterday.
