My understanding is that the California Highway Patrol is the ONLY state police agency in California. Counties and cities all have multiple agencies.

On 12 July 1995, the 271 State Police Officers were merged into the CHP program. At that time the California State Police Program closed up: (link to end of California State Police)

I knew that I have seen and even met California State Police, but I could not remember seeing them for a while. This is why.

I was right in that we had them, and you were correct that they aren't there anymore. It is just the highway patrol.
