Because that's not statist enough . . . Well, it almost sounds like the vice principal just wanted to look at high school girls' panties, but I could be way off....
To: hobbes1
you're welcome to get in on that bet too.
$100 = 'no compelling state interest'.
hmmmmm ??

Some of the people posting here are just as bad as the liberals........Anything goes.
Reminded me of high school where it was a constant battle of the principal to get us to tuck our shirtails in. It was a constant battle but in the end he was trying to teach us to take pride in ourselves and how we looked......to this day I still tuck my shirt tails in. Didn't hurt us a bit and we didn't have any namby pamby parents challenging him.

This thread presently is long on "knee jerk" and totally devoid of thought. There might have been a better way to accomplish the check, but I like the basic precaution.
To brand others arguments as "knee-jerk", is to diminish your own argument, since you do not refute the other's opinions with logical arguments. My position is that this is entirely an inappropriate abuse of power. This vice-principal decided to create a new dress code, without approval of the local school board. Clearly, beyond her scope of authority. Secondly, the school board, in its wisdom, realized that there is no legal way to enforce what underwear that students wear to dances, or to school. No court in the nation would tolerate this encroachment on personal liberty. This is actually very insightful, in that, it indicates the mindset of the PC left these days, in that they think they can make, and enforce the most ridiculous of laws and regulations. Don't get me wrong, if these girls began to expose their bare-bottoms, they would then be in violation of public indecency laws, which are already on the books.

If I find a principal asking my daughter to pull up her skirt so she can check to see if she is wearing thong underwear or any other kind of underwear, that principal has got a fight on his or her hands.
I don't care if there is some sort of school code in play here - making that kind of request is a form of child abuse as far as I am concerned.
That Assistant Principal would be living out of a shopping bag under a freeway overpass by time my lawywer and I were finished with them.

I think that any case the students or their parents bring is a real long shot - it's pretty clear that the actions of the school were legal. That being said, I still don't think it was a very good idea, but it was almost certainly legal.
So, how are you guys going to settle up the bet if it never makes it into a courtroom in the first place? I'm betting that the parents will call a lawyer and he'll tell them their odds are so long that they might as well forget it ;)
To: hobbes1
You guys should get together, find some girls, have some kids, and get back to this topic when you are about 30-35, and have actually lived in the real world.
You're right I don't have any kids, so there is an element here that I admittedly won't quite understand until I do have kids, fair enough, but I have spent time in the "real world". I have no problem with schools setting standards. In fact, I think setting an appropriate skirt level is not only fine, but a very good idea. However, what kind of underwear a girl is wearing is none of the school's business, and girls who wear thongs are not sluts because they do wear a thong.

$100 = 'no compelling state interest'. I want in - the compelling state interest is the school's interest in maintaining order and discipline, as per Hazelwood.
Be careful - this might turn out to be an expensive thread for you ;)

Let's see now -- high school girls in short skirts and thong underwear at a dance. I rather doubt that a girl has any reason for doing this other than providing easy access.
And the fact that the principal is checking at all suggests that "easy access" has already become a problem.
At any rate, the lady's right: that kind of clothing has no place at a public event for kids.

$200's my limit, but since hobbes1's lack of commitment is showing, you're on.
we can make it personal, as per above, or send the proceeds to FR.
