Putin has been real cozy with GWB - I don't trust him at all, and worry that the USA does.

Putin understand that ecomnomic issues are the most critical issues facing Russia (duh) and also understands that you want to be the friend, not the enemy, of the world's economic superpower. Putin is a pragamtist, not a die-hard idiologue.
