Well I for one hope that we can enjoy the Philippines and them us without repeating all of the mistakes of the past, which were partially responsible for the climate which led to us getting booted out.
I don't think we will ever have the huge presence there that we did prior to the Pinatubo eruption. If we did, then market forces and human nature would probably drag us back in the same direction. The one thing that would make it turn out differently is if the average Filipino was more prosperous than the average GI or bargirl.
We'd actually still be there if the volcano hadn't made it more expensive than it was worth. It looked like the surface of the moon after the typhoon settled the ash.
