Police: Investigation Complete In Enron Exec's Suicide

SUGAR LAND, Texas, 1:52 p.m. CDT April 23, 2002 - The Sugar Land Police Department announced Tuesday that it has completed the investigation into an Enron Corp. executive's suicide that occurred on Jan. 25 and is closing the case.

John Clifford Baxter

The department said that it conducted a thorough investigation into John Clifford Baxter's death, and with the completion of tests by independent agencies, the case is closed as a suicide.

"We have conducted an independent, thorough and complete investigation of this case that meets all accepted police investigative practices and are ready to release information about the case," said Police Chief Earnest Taylor. "We want to share the complete details of the investigation. We also want to clear up misleading, inaccurate information from media sources that used incomplete information about the case."

However, with the filing on April 12 of a second temporary restraining order against the City by the attorneys representing the Baxter family, the City is prohibited from releasing some of the details of the case, including its investigation, until the Baxter family's privacy issues are resolved.

The City received its first restraining order on April 11, following the Texas Attorney General's office issuing an opinion that day indicating certain information in the case was not confidential.

A hearing on both temporary restraining orders is scheduled for May 9 in Travis County District Court.

Police said that in following the order from the Travis County District Court, counsel for the city, the Baxter family and the attorney general's office are reviewing the material to help clarify and potentially narrow the information actually in dispute.

If the parties come to an agreement, certain information could be released prior to the hearing date, authorities said.

"Until that time, this department will not debate nor otherwise comment on what we confidently feel has been a quality investigation conducted by outstanding professionals," Taylor said.
