It was no coincidence, and the founders of "Earth Day" made no bones about it. The first "Earth Day" was not just Lenin's birthday but his
Centennial. The whole thing was a piece of socialist sass, choosing that date with the certain knowledge that nobody in the media would either mention it or challenge the Soviet Union's absolutely godawful record on environmental protection.
I've been calling attention to it every year since. It amazes me how few people are aware of the Leninist origins of "Earth Day."
