Citing privacy, schools bar publicizing honor roll names

(Plainfield-AP, Apr. 21, 2002 10:35 PM) _ Schools in Plainfield have adopted a strict privacy policy that actually doesn't allow honor roll students to be named on its website.

School officials say they are bowing to the wishes of parents who insist on privacy. Some of the parents are worried that the hoopla surrounding honor roll status might make their children targets of predators.

Plainfield Memorial School Principal Sheryl Kempain says parents sign forms indicating how their child may be identified in print and on the website. Most agree to just a first name and first initial of the last name.

Federal law requires confidentiality of student records. Schools may release information that would not generally be considered harmful or an invasion of privacy, such as honor roll lists.

This may be one of those districts plagued by Dah Brothers, who don' like no chahld actin' like Whitey an' succeedin'. The state of CT has seen the urbanization of a number of its school systems in recent years - this is probably one of them.

HUH?

No, I bet one of the two following questions have come up recently: 1)Why are there so few people on the honor roll or 2)Why are there no blacks on the honor roll.

Given the risks of publicizing students names on a school's website, this is understandable. It is unfortunate.

hah, if you're lucky... if you're not, then your honor roll includes anyone with a detectable level of brain activity.

Risk? Our local public schools put graduating senior's names, pictures and GPA's in the local paper.

I hope one of the predators they are avoiding is the Whose Who in American High Schools people. Once your kid finds out they are eligible you have to shell out 85 bucks to get your child in a book no one but your child wants.

lol, good one!

Actually, I thought this was going to be about parents whose children did NOT make the honor roll. I thought that they were up in arms about their children's privacy because their names are not mentioned. (I gotta stop my negative thinking....)

I suppose this school doesn't issue those bumper stickers, "Proud parent of an XXX School honor roll student" either.

Well they better stop publishing any high school sports then. No photos no names.

No we can't do that because public schools are for sports.

Yeah, that's risky too... though graduating seniors are usually at or near the age of consent. If a predator were after them, it would be more of a question of rape or indecent assault. However, if the school is looking to avoid giving pederasts (child molesters) access to minors, keeping their names off the internet is a good place to start--don't you think?

"Actually, it can be done, and it's probably a good idea. "

So as long as the idot left can identify a possible maybe could be might be situation we should all accept further restrictions.

Not this Conservative! To follow this logic, we know people die in car accidents so we should ban any child riding in a car. It's for the children(IFTC).

Children can drown in pools so we must ban all pools. IFTC.

Children can fall off their bikes so we should ban all bikes. IFTC.

TV can show children bad things so we should ban TV. IFTC.

Children have been killed in airplane crashes so they should not be allowed to fly. IFTC.

The fricken left government types cannot protect us from diddly. Be the best parent you can be and if your lucky you can see your childs name in the paper for winning a spot on the honor roll instead of scoring a goal, basket, touchdown etc.
