Nope. It was Luis Bunuel famous filmmaker born in Spain in 1900 who coined the phrase: "Thank God I'm an atheist." Bunuel exhibited a radical, iconoclastic view of the world in which he found society decadent and antithetical to human liberation. He has been called a realist, a surrealist, a Marxist, an anarchist, a mystic, an anticleric, a Freudian, a post-Freudian, a sadist, a moralist, a Christian, and a poet-showman of the macabre. His scenarios range from the absurd to the tragic to the satiric to the erotic, profusely endued with the outrageous and the scandalous.
Friedrich Nietzsche, the philosopher from whom Fascism drew much of its inspiration, said:
I cannot believe in a God who wants to be praised all the time.
- Friedrich Nietzsche (1844 - 1900)
God is a thought who makes crooked all that is straight.
- Friedrich Nietzsche
Is man one of God's blunders? Or is God one of man's blunders?
- Friedrich Nietzsche
Once spirit was God, then it became man, and now it is even becoming mob.
- Friedrich Nietzsche
There cannot be a God because if there were one, I could not believe that I was not He.
- Friedrich Nietzsche
Woman was God's second mistake.
- Friedrich Nietzsche
If you read Oriana Fallaci's essay in its entirely you will see that her use of "I am an atheist, thank God" isn't at all hateful.

This was a great read. I hope it is well circulated. If we don't destroy terrorism it will destroy us. They won't be happy until we all look like a war zone. Just look at the hell they keep their own people in.Terrorist don't want a better life for anyone.

"....once she learns that God's goodness is independent of Christians' wickedness."
I hope you are right, she has far too much sense and love to be a true athiest. I've always enjoyed her writing, although a novel is a little to much of her, these short pieces are right in her sweet spot.

I'm keeping copies on hand in order to give one to every person who uses the word "racist" in connection with criticism of Muslims. I can't find ONE thing of her essay that doesn't say what many other talented and correct writers (Steyn, for instance) are saying. We no longer need to bring others to our country. Let them stay where they are and if they want a different culture at home, let them impact their homeland. I'm tired of all of those from other countries coming here and trying to change America like the very places they wanted to escape. My sweetheart is from Ireland--even he complains about things American--I ask him, why is he here? If he wants things the way they were in Ireland, then why did he bother to come here. He shuts up quickly. My message to foreigners: accept our culture, including ENGLISH (including those from Mexico--do you know that even in Texas, there are some towns along the border where SPANISH is the "legal" language for the local government, even for town hall meetings?), or GO BACK HOME!

Oriana Fallaci is a Leftist. But she has no patience with the political correctness, the lies, the shibboleths, the pretensions, the anti-Western mentality of the post modern Left. As I read this essay of hers, for all of her secularism and atheism, I'm struck by her sensitivity, intelligence, candor, and penetrating judgment that have made her a journalistic legend. Doesn't she remind you of Camille Paglia? Hmmmm, I don't recall reading anything by Camille since the attack. I think she had already left Salon by 9/11. I'll have to do some research.
