BOCA RATON - Governor Jeb Bush today participated in the ribbon cutting of the nation's newest biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility at a ceremony in Boca Raton. The $90 million state-of-the-art facility, owned and operated by Nabi Biopharmaceuticals, will be used to create Nabi-HB, an immune globulin used for the prevention of the Hepatitis B virus. Nabi Biopharmaceuticals currently employs 176 Floridians.
"The research and development team at Nabi Biopharmaceuticals have inspired very significant life-saving products," said Governor Bush. "We are proud of the work they do and especially proud that they have called Florida home since 1969. Biopharmaceuticals and biotechnology are among the most rapidly growing industry sectors in our economy and, thanks to companies like Nabi, Florida is among those leading the way in new bio-based advancements that benefit all of us."
The new facility was dedicated in the memory of the late U.S. Congressman John Joseph Moakley, of Massachusetts (Dist. 9), whose life was significantly prolonged through the use of Nabi-HB.
Nabi-HB is the first U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) licensed product to be manufactured at the facility. The product received FDA approval in October 2001. FDA approval of Nabi-HB was a major milestone for Nabi, providing the company full control over the production of its antibody-based biopharmaceutical products - from the plasma donor to the patient. Nabi also plans to manufacture its investigational antibody treatments for staph infections and hepatitis C at the facility.
"We greatly appreciate Governor Bush's strong support of Florida's biotech industry and his joining Nabi at this proud and important day in our company's history," said David J. Gury, the chairman, president and CEO of Nabi Biopharmaceuticals.
Florida ranks second in the country in employment in the biomedical industry. Approximately 2,200 Florida firms employ more than 300,000 workers in the production of medical instruments and supplies, ophthalmic goods, laboratory apparatus and instruments, pharmaceuticals and selected chemicals in the delivery of specialized health services, and medical laboratories.
See ya later, Summer.
