That was the Moon Treaty. The [can't think of a polite name just now] group pushed a little too hard with that one. But the 1967 UN Outer Space Treaty is still in effect and is still being interpreted. The 67 treaty has an escape clause that allows a graceful exit, which should be invoked immediately.

Boeing, without a doubt, could make a better and cheaper reusable space vehicle than the NASA space shuttle. Especially if they have competition from other companies. Capitalism works.

Clarino is probably a dissenter in China as well as out of the mainstream on FR. Maybe one of those Falling Gongs.
To: altair
If we really started getting into space and found a practical way to mine the asteroids Boeing stock would go outta the sky LOL( a remnant of NASA should remain as a space branch of the armed services).

Give the PA authority 1000 square miles on the moon. No Jews, no pesky neighbors, plenty of sunlight. That's too close. Give them part of Mercury instead.

screw the treaty, I'm of chinese descent and have not forgotten history. The chinese empire dominated the pacific and indian oceans in the 15th century, the imperial fleets rounded the cape and established outposts all over the place, but China's rulers became isolationist. In just 300 hundred years, the west with their dinky ships managed to conquor the entire world and surpass the middle kingdom technologically. China, in the meantime became overpopulatedm, impoverished, and stagnant. I think what their current space exploration is a good thing, only this time we should expand and take as much territory as we can in order to ensure at the very least future survival or perhaps even regain status of superpower, not only on this planet, but the entire solar system.

a remnant of NASA should remain as a space branch of the armed servicesWe already have a Space Command. NASA is completely redundant.

There will be no future in China for people like Clarino unless China expands. But U.S prevents any kind of expansion on Earth, the only place we have left to go is up.
To: borghead
They declined because they became isolationist despite having a position of overwhelming technological and economic superiority but but I thought Raimondo and Pat Buchanan thought extreme isolation was a good idea.

China needs to expand, its overpopulated and running out of resources, and war is not an option simply because U.S hold unrivaled economic and technological superiority. So China must expand outwards just to survive.
To: borghead
They are overpopulated despite what some on FR raise hell about I definitely understand Deng's( the anti communist communist) reasoning behind the one child order. The country would not have survived without it.

Although I think the chinese government should help farmers like Clarino, but on the other hand the important science, research, and exploration that will affect future generations must get adequate funding. Raising the pyramid is definitely better than filling in the base.
To: borghead
we should expand and take as much territory as we can It won't be easy. Each settlement in the solar system will have to be built with total reliance on technology. How long would it be before the solar system is as crowded as earth right now?
I won't worry about what is next after the solar system, there is simply too much to be done just with that, and it won't happen quickly. The solar system should be developed, it belongs to us as much as earth. And, I don't care if the Chinese colonize the moon and Mars, there is enough for all for a long time to come.
To: RightWhale
When the chinese do start to do it, the Americans will expand as well just out of paranoia(logical madness) but still.
