Did you read the article? Papal selection of bishops is, historically, a rather recent occurrence, even in America. St. Augustine was chosen by the people.

I don't advocate that it be a totally democratic process, but more input from "the faithful" would be a wise move at this point.

Sorry, Romulus, there is no popular election of clergy in Episcopal ranks, either. Take for example the recent events in Accokeek, Maryland, where the elected choice of the parish was refused by a radical left bishop, even to the point of involving the U S Government in what would be a totally religious situation...
