First, Joseph Minerd's lawyers argued that he should be spared the death penalty because it discriminates against white people.

A federal judge rejected that contention.

Then they asked that the execution of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh be videotaped to show that the death penalty is "cruel and unusual punishment."

McCamic told Cohill that an affidavit used to obtain a warrant of Minerd's workstation at the Elliott Co. in Jeannette, where he was employed as a machinist, was misleading and that the search exceeded the scope of the warrant.

In April 1999, agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms searched the work area and said they found a 2-by-8-inch metal pipe, a roll of black wire and two small motors that could be used to make a remote-control bomb.

This is REALLY funny. I'm not a machinist (or a bomber), and you would find such stuff on my workbench.

What do they think machinists have at their workbenches? Beanie babies?

I'm sure there's more to the story with these items, but I thought it was funny as reported.
