Madam Cleo Weighs Senate Run
By Wed Gee
CHATTANOOGA, TN. Just days after Tipper Gore indicated she may run for the Senate seat to be vacated by Fred Thompson, BSNN.net has learned that she may face stiff competition from Madam Cleo, the Jamaican shaman and spokeswoman for a psychic hotline. Although Miss Cleo was born in California she is weighing an overture from Democrats who privately acknowledge Cleo is a better candidate than Tipper Gore to run for the Senate seat from Tennessee.
Sources close to Miss Cleo, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Democrats first urged her to run after Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., announced last Friday that he would not seek re-election. The sources cited Miss Cleo's commitment to public service (she offers her services "FREE for the first three minutes") as more than enough qualification to be a US senator, and believe she owes it to herself to give serious thought to a run.
One Democratic operative close to Miss Cleo said she had received a handful of messages from the Tarot Cards urging her to consider running for the Senate, and that Miss Cleo was weighing them. But the official said there was some doubt Miss Cleo would run, given her troubles with the law, her natural tendency to shrink from the limelight, and her general unease about the national political process. Still, the official said it was telling that Miss Cleo did not reject the offer out of hand.
Some Democrats believe the occult is the best hope to elect a Democrat senator from Tennessee. Hillary Rodham Clinton, who strongly supports both the candidacy of Madam Cleo and Tipper Gore, declared, "A moderate state needs a medium Senator."
