I also was the guy who would go find things when they couldn't be gotten.
One of my "usual tactics" was to go aboard some air craft carrier in port.
Then "get supplies" and disappear back to my Destroyer.
The Weapons Officer used to give me a 2 day liberty upon my return.
But he also warned me if I ever got caught, I was on my own. LOL
