USO Canteen Freeper Style

War has come to our shores. It was committed on American soil.  We have been able to live in Freedom only because of those who have fought in the past wars giving life, limb and all the sacrifices for us to live in Freedom and go about our day without fear.

On September 11, 2001, that comfort, that feeling of living in a land that would not be attacked ended.

William T. Sherman said it succinctly, "War is hell."

The day has come for this Nation and its people to understand that there is a risk in losing its freedom, and in reality there always has been. We have ONLY stayed free because of the sacrifices of our military, our warriors.

This is about saving the future of America. Aristotle said, "We make war that we may live in peace."

We are seeing the American Flag flying at homes now more than ever in my lifetime. We are seeing the American Flag flying on vehicles and people wearing Flag pins and small Flags on their clothes. America is united in the cause for Freedom and for our country to WIN against the evil that came upon our land to kill and hurt us. To change our way of life and to destroy America which is US, you and me. To take away our precious Freedom.

This is the Freeper version of the USO Canteen. Where soldiers could come and feel a small part of being at home. It is a place where you that have family in the military can post a thought to a loved one that might be able to read it far away from home. A place where we that support our military can help support them, post to them, fun graphics showing the price in America and our troops. Poems, quotes, cartoons, or articles of how America is behind our troops.

Those in our military are our Nation's warriors. Let us join hands, fly our Flag and let the world know how important our warriors are to us....And that our MILITARY, our Warriors, are America's TRUE HEROS!

"No Marine was ever honored for what they received. Honor was the reward for what they gave." (Anonymous) CHIEF gave his all in many ways. He touched our lives and his friendship meant so much to all of us. He will live in our hearts forever, and his friendship will always be a bright and shining memory in our hearts and souls.

PS When I told Barb that you said there were several ladies waiting to dance with the old black guy, she said "they all had better be wearing steel tipped shoes..." :o)

Hi Everyone, tomorrow if you're still in the mood for dancing and want to hear some "special" music, perhaps you would like to tune into WQXR

Please see posts #208 and #209 here for further info.

In case you don't know, Monaco has been holding an American Special Forces veteran and family man hostage for 861 days.

Tomorrow, Sunday April 14 at 11 AM Eastern time, according to www.monaco-tourism.com ,WQXR will be broadcasting a live radio show from Monaco and giving away free trips to Monaco. Wouldn't it be great if a FReeper could win a trip and then tell the Media about the "royal treatment" Monaco has given/is giving American Green Beret veteran, husband, father of 3 young children, son and brother Ted Maher?!

MONACO: FREEING AMERICAN TED MAHER NOW ---NOW THAT WOULD BE MUSIC TO OUR EARS!

Thank you FReepers and FRiends.

(If you'd like to ping your FRiends to this post, that'd be wonderful. Many thanks. : ))

As requested:

Jane Froman

From her biography:

Jane Froman's three-decade career included radio and television, recordings on major labels, nightclub performances, and appearances in Broadway shows and Hollywood movies. Although she had classical voice training, early in her career she was drawn to the songs of the era's brilliant young songwriters, George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin, who were inspiring a resurgence in popular music. In 1934, at age 27, she became the top-polled "girl singer." The famous composer and producer, Billy Rose, when asked to name the top ten female singers, is reported to have replied, "Jane Froman and nine others."

Jane's unique, dramatic voice seemed to mirror the courage with which she overcame multiple life adversities. One of these was the February, 1943 USO plane crash in which she suffered severe injuries. Her courageous return to Europe on crutches to inspire wounded servicemen was a focus of the 1952 award winning 20th-Century Fox movie, With a Song in My Heart. While Susan Hayward was Oscar-nominated for her portrayal of Jane, Jane's own singing on the soundtrack became a best-selling record album.

The movie caused a career renaissance resulting in many new fans, many more recordings and her own Emmy-nominated CBS television show, USA Canteen (later renamed The Jane Froman Show). I Believe, the very first hit song to be introduced on television, was written for Jane by the show's musicians and earned her a gold record.

Jane retired to her home town of Columbia, Missouri in 1961, but continued the volunteer work for which she was known throughout her career. In the '50s, Jane had helped redirect fan adoration into creative projects and gala benefits for the financial support of the children's program at the Menninger Institute. She was born in 1907 and passed in 1980.

Some of her hits were:

With a Song in My Heart
I'll Walk Alone
I Believe
Blue Moon
Get Happy
You'll Never Walk Alone
Someone To Watch Over Me
It's Magic
Encore Cheri
Can't Help Lovin' That Man of Mine
Bewitched
A City Called Heaven

Holy Mackerel, Sam... I don't have a clue where you found the "Little Patches" memorabilia... but Nieswender would really be proud !!! She was "his baby"... and brought him HOME too. I'll have to print this thread... and send it to him. I doubt that the jacket would fit anymore... but we've all put on a bit.

I couldn't go to a USO Dance with out my father. We was in the Naval Air Force in WWII. He used to go to the USO Dances and even met my mother at one when he was stationed in Jacksonville Fla. He loved to dance and jitterbugged with me when I was a little girl. He was still square dancing every week when he passed away a few years ago at the age of 68. He was a good Christian man who thought that life was to be enjoyed. He was also a strong conservative.

I am very proud of him. He was a very unique person and I miss him terribly.
My mother helped me pick out the song to play with his picture this morning, she remembers all of those Swing songs! She was also a great dancer. I always loved to watch them dance together.
