Study Shows 10,000 Victims Report Losing $18 Million to Internet Fraud

Almost 10,000 Americans were suckered out of $17.8 million last year in online scams, according to the first annual report by the Internet Fraud Complaint Center.

One-third of almost 50,000 complaints received at the center's Web site during 2001 involved online fraud. The median financial loss for those scammed was $435.

Three-quarters of victims were contacted by scam perpetrators through e-mail, with most of the rest visiting fraudulent Web sites.
