Why can't we do that here in the US?

Believe me, people are trying. Remember how the FBI kept reporters so far away from WACO they could barely see the buildings through a high-powered lens? It's also the reason so many foreign governments (and private organizations too) are trying to limit what we can see or read on the Internet. No government likes freedrom of information. It makes them too accountable.
