POPULAR RADIO PERSONALITY PHIL HENDRIE
SIGNS ON TO DEVELOP SERIES FOR NBC STUDIOS
February 6th, 2002Phil Hendrie, the host of "The Phil Hendrie Show," a popular, syndicated radio show driven by Hendrie's rare form of "radio theater," has signed an overall deal with NBC Studios to develop a primetime series it was announced by Ted Harbert, President, NBC Studios.
"Quite simply put, Phil is a genius when it comes to creating characters - and hit characters are what make hit television shows," said Harbert. "We can't wait to bring his sophisticated brand of comedy to television."
Syndicated to over 89 stations nationwide through Premiere Radio Networks, "The Phil Hendrie Show" features a rare menagerie of characters who discuss various topics. What makes this show particularly unique and interesting to Hendrie fans is that the host himself is the "voice" of all the characters on the program. A radio show satire of sorts, listeners are often fooled into believing a particular guest is "real" and call to challenge his or her argument.
Hendrie, a native of Arcadia, CA, worked as a disc jockey for 15 years before starting his career in talk radio at KVEN-AM in Ventura and eventually KFI-AM in Los Angeles. His big break came in 1990 while at KVEN-AM in Ventura, CA when he introduced a fictional Iraqi character named Raj Feenan at the height of the Gulf War to incite callers by pretending to be this sympathetic Iraqi who defended Saddam Hussein.
In 1992, he left KVEN for major market WSB-AM in Atlanta before moving to WIOD-AM in Miami. In 1996, he returned to KFI-AM and in October 1999, Hendrie signed his deal with Premiere Radio, where his show is currently based.
