I remember, back when I used to watch TV, seeing Gumble on the air and finding him rather a pleasant fellow. He was round, he smiled a lot, and he seemed very cheerful. Pleasant to watch. If he was left-wing back then, he kept it to himself.
He was a good entertainer. But he went sour when he started thinking of himself as a serious, politically informed news person. And his bosses went wrong when they failed to notice that, with this change in personality, his rating started to go down the tubes. They waited maybe five or ten years too long to fire him. Their bosses should fire them for gross incompetence in letting this fiasco continue for so long. Hard to fire a black man? Then find another black man with some common sense and audience appeal.
