April 7, 2002 -- Prosecutors will file new papers this week in the case of shoe bomber Richard Reid - but they're still not saying if they will seek death penalty charges against him.
Reid, a 28-year-old British convert to Islam, is charged with trying to detonate bombs hidden in his sneakers while aboard American Airlines Flight 63 from Paris to Miami on Dec. 22.

I wonder who Reid's lawyer is and who's paying him.

If Shoe Boy Reid is charged, like Moussaoui, with being part of the 9/11 conspiracy (and I suspect the computer evidence would allow tying him to that conspiracy,) then the death penalty automatically follows.

I searched UPI's archives and the only references to Reid's lawyer there that I could find were from Jan 02 and listed a federal public defender named Tamar Birckhead as Reid's lawyer. Makes sense since I doubt this dope is well-placed enough to make a decent lawyer necessary, and I recall hearing that neither of his parents are making enough money to pay for high-priced legal help.
