Live from Crawford, Texas, it's the George and Tony show.
Will George slap Bill and Yasser around again like he did last night? Will Tony come off as George's toy poodle? Will the press be their usual boorish selves ? Is Helen Thomas there ?
The answer to these and other questions will be answered at Noon eastern time.
The Big_Picture is that we threw out an honorable man who made a few mistakes in order to usher in 8 years of some of the worst corruption in American history. And the Big_Picture is that his son is now reclaiming little by little some of the freedoms, and the honor that we lost in those 8 dark years.
Reality, my friend..........whether you like it or not. And, I really don't think Hitler has a whole lot to do with this discussion, do you?
Believe it or not, conservatives don't sit around, hoping that Demoncrats win.
We elected Reagan, who ran as a conservative, with a landslide in 1980. We elected Reagan again, who ran as a conservative and governed as a conservative, with a landslide in 1984. We then elected Bush (who ran as a conservative) with a landslide in 1988.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that if Bush governed as a conservative... guess what... landslide in 1992.
But Bush didn't govern as a conservative. He raised taxes, signed an assualt weapons bill, put a pro-abortionist on the Supreme Court, and went on an enviromentalist crusade. In short, he betrayed every conservative core value, as well as his campaign promises.
People had a choice between a real democrat and a pretend democrat. The real democrat won. Perot didn't cause Bush to lose. Neither did Buchanan. Bush caused Bush to lose.
Impeachment was the political issue of the day for most of 1998 and early 1999, yet Bush, who was already the GOP frontrunner, was silent on the issue. That's not leadership. That's political cowardice at best, and personal cowardice at worst.
It's an issue because another poster was attempting to pass Bush off as a man of values and principle. Yet he was silent on the largest political issue of Clinton's second term-- an issue relating directly to "values and principle".
As to his popularity numbers, why do you think they are so high?
It's because liberals and democrats approve of him!
Well most of the people debating with you here have been quite polite
I understand your love of the American ideals (freedom, all men created equal, government of the people, by the people, for the people) -- and I DO agree that government has become a huge monstrosity, and that we must be vigilant to guard our precious freedoms. I also understand the real menace of socialism and the quiet and oh-so-subtle indoctrination of the pliant masses (part of the reason I homeschool--my kids aren't gonna be mindless sheeple)
However...don't throw the baby out with the bathwater...we have a President who understands how precious our freedoms are, what it really means to be elected to serve in "the People's House, and he does seem to have a very grounded and moral view of life (perhaps because of the mistakes he has made, perhaps because of his upbringing, perhaps because of his faith). He comes across as honorable, he is humbled to be President and he has a frank and forthright manner...(perhaps I am naive--but it's such a change after the past 8 years) I pray daily for his protection and that he be given wisdom and discernment, and hope that he does not destroy my trust -- but I know that he may, as we are all flawed and many fail
I often think of the alternative, (esp. how Gore would have used the same flacid,, make nicey-nice response to terror as Clinton)...and I hope Pres. Bush can make some difference in more ways than the fight against terror...but it's gonna be "baby steps". Fighting against a stubborn, partisan and out-for-themselves Congress and Senate is not easy, they will do all they can to drag this man down into the dirt with them
FOFL. Hey now, you haven't been called any of that on this thread. At least not yet. I'm not giving up on you, Buckaroo. I think you're redeemable. If you love this country, and I believe you do, then stop hurting it. Stop blaming President Bush for every problem we've had for the past 50 years. Don't condemn the man, help him out. Get busy, send some hard line Pubbies with backbones to Washington. He needs them. We all do.
And about impeachment. What you just said makes absolutely no sense. You claim that you supported Bush, and voted for him. How could you do that when you believed that he was a coward, if you have any principles at all?
I think you just blew your cover.
Lot's of other countries have Constitutions that are supposed to be adhered to as well, but aren't. Do you think of the Constitution as a brittle holy relic?
FOFL. Very good point. Thank you, too.
Stop saying that without backing it up with specific facts. I heard every word of the press conference today, and he said nothing about 'giving away our republic.'
So far........and I've been here WAY too long......you haven't backed ONE of your accusations up with a SINGLE fact, just your empty, unreasoned rhetoric.
It's time for you to put up, or shut up.
You've betrayed yourself with the "living and flexible Constitution" claim. As Walter Williams would put it: how would you like to play a game of poker with "living and flexible" rules?
And it is people like me, like President Bush, pragmatic optimists, who wrote the U.S. Constitution, not cynical, pessimistic scaredy cats, afraid of things going bump in the night, like you.
LOL! Actually, the Constitution was written by a group of men who saw tyranny coming through the windows and around every corner. They were "cynical and pessimistic" about their government, but certainly not "scaredy cats"
BTW: Clinton was also a "pragmatic optimist".
Ummm.... I think that September 11th may have something to do with this...most Americans, including liberals and democrats were shaken to their very souls by what happened...I hope we will not forget this...Clinton and his hedonistic ways might have seemed just dandy, life was carefree and the money was good...but things are scary and dead serious now...and hopefully we all realize that we need a President who is interested in more than his Oval Office sink and the cute intern with the large mouth and even larger...(well you get the idea, eh ??)
I was concerned about his absence over impeachment at the time, but I came to the conclusion that tax cuts, school vouchers, social security reform, and a DOJ that would get the truth out about Clinton; trumped Bush's reluctance to address the impeachment issue.
I also took him at his word when he said he would veto CFR.
I believed that the "good" outweighed the "bad", so I supported him. Now, I don't believe that anymore.
Unless something really BIG happened this afternoon that I'm not aware of, Blair isn't my President. George W Bush is and he loves this country just as much if not more than you do. In case you hadn't noticed, he's trying his best to preserve and protect it. He ain't giving away nothing but if I were I've got a short list of naysayers he could start with.
