Live Thread: President Bush and Prime Minister Blair Press Conference, Noon EST, 4/6/02
self | Saturday, April 6, 2002 | Kristinn

Posted on 04/06/2002 7:49:04 AM PST by kristinn

Live from Crawford, Texas, it's the George and Tony show.

Will George slap Bill and Yasser around again like he did last night? Will Tony come off as George's toy poodle? Will the press be their usual boorish selves ? Is Helen Thomas there ?

The answer to these and other questions will be answered at Noon eastern time.

You grow less coherent with each post, and I must divine your intent with increasing degrees of interpretation.

You say that I an supportive of an empire of America? I say to you sir that free people are not infected with dreams of empire, war comes unlooked for to our peaceful shores, we are simply obliged to end war so that we can survive. The will to live is universal, and any apology for desiring that you or myself should live out our natural lives would be false.

Can't apologize for drawing breath.

I do not understand the bit about attaching srings to take away natural rights, I am opposed to government misuse of power to meddle with people's lives, which is why I love America. Here life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness prevails, our government is our servant, not our master.

I do believe that we have damaged these principles, it is unjust that the average American must sacrifice half of their lives in service to the state, but soon the boomer generation will move out of power and sane people can begin to dismantle the vastly overbuilt public sector.

Just a passing liberal phase, which history will remember as a minor disaster for America and the cause of human dignity and freedom, try as they might, the liberals have not yet unmade the most successful and just formulation of government ever to grace this planet.

And they wont.

It is for freedom and liberty that I argue, but there can be neither if we allow tyrranical mass murderers to do violence to innocent people right here at home. It is tragic that we have to fight, if only clinton had not been such a foolish cowardly idiot, perhaps it would not be necessary, I dont know.

America is nobodys property but our own, that we must go abroad to find and eradicate the forces of evil is actually a blessing. I would be much more deeply aggreived if we had to battle al qaida in Peoria. Wouldn't you?

You are in LA-LA land...

Au contraire, you appear to be the one in LA-LA land. You appear to not notice the threats that exist beyond our borders. Those threats are not contained to those beyond our borders but rather to US. Like it or not, the United States has real interests in other parts of the world. Oil is a prime example. Our economy and the world's economy cannot run without it. So, protecting our interests in other parts of the world is necessary for protecting our interests here at home.

You statement that Iraq has been contained for eight years is pointless. So what? That doesn't mean it shall remain so. I favor action versus reaction. As the President stated, he will not wait while others seek to harm us. Look how Sadaam is funding the Palestinian suicide bombers. No doubt he is also funding Al Qaeda.

You have a beef about a declaration of war. Have we gone into Iraq yet? Perhaps the President will ask for a declaration of war when the time is warranted. The President asked and did receive support for a war on terror, for those responsible for the atrocities of 9/11.

We are not policing the world. We are protecting ourselves and our allies. From the way you talk, you seem to think we shouldn't even have allies. Talk about LA-LA land.

Federalized airport security, no guns for pilots, no serious border security, amnesty for some illegals, no vouchers, increased federal spending, CFR bill, breaking campaign promise on CFR bill, more funding for BATF, no investigation of the crimes of the previous administration, etc....

I agree with you on some of these issues, many of which were compromised parts of bills passed for their greater goal.......ie, vouchers in the education bill. Many of them are matters of degree, and the issues are not yet dealt with in full.......eg. border security, investigation of crimes of the previous administration. CFR was foisted upon him by a weak-willed, spineless Congress interested only in their own reelection, and I'm one of the majority of freepers who believe the SCOTUS will throw out what is unconstitutional, and also believe that the President signed the bill to get rid of the issue longer term.

You say he is not a Conservative. I disagree, and point to moral issues such as abortion, marriage, personal responsibility, issues such as support for business, money only given when results are achieved, an America first foreign policy, including refusal to sign Kyoto, and disregard of EU whining about his axis of evil, and of course, the all important TAX CUT!

Every issue you bring up is subject to debate, even among staunch conservatives. I believe he is what he says he is.......a Compassionate Conservative, and if you are honest, you'll probably admit that there are 'conservatives' on this forum who don't have an ounce of compassion in their bodies.

It probably won't surprise you that I disagree. :)
I see President Bush and President Reagan in the same light. First, I see both as the President of all the people of the United States, not just we Pubbies or conservatives. Second, both men accept and wear with wisdom and grace the heavy mantle of leadership. President Bush, like President Reagan, is a man I can respect and trust with my life and I do.

I'm very pleased to learn you voted for President Bush in 2000. However, I can't begin to tell you how disappointing it is to hear someone who professes to care about the country say:

"I would support a GOP challenger in the primary. I would also vote 3rd party in the general election if Bush prevailed in the primary."
Keep thinking that way and come January 20, 2005 you can dance with your keyhole vision and self-righteous smugness at John Edwards or Hillary Clinton's Inagural Ball. Don't be part of the problem like the dems and RINOs in Congress help put an end to their obstructionism. Do you really want it said about you that at a time when the President had an unexpected and awesome burden of war that you added to that burden and in effect harmed the country ? You can't really think 100% of nothing is better than 50% of something. Wake up, Mulder. The country didn't get in this shape overnight nor did it happen without the support of a large percentage of the population. The items on your agenda can't be overturned or reversed in the blink of an eye. Nor, I might add, did the President ever promise to do half of those things. As a responsible citizen, your work didn't end on November 7, 2000. No, that is the day it should have begun in earnest. Since the campaign I've heard President Bush give many moving and powerful speeches but his acceptance speech at the convention remains one of my favorites. That's when he told us exactly who he is and what he believes. Since then he has faced one of the saddest, most terrible challenges in our history with humility and greatness. He has not faltered, he has not failed. Time and again he has earned my respect, my trust and my continued support.
For me, gaining this office is not the ambition of a lifetime, but it IS the opportunity of a lifetime.

And I will make the most of it. I believe great decisions are made with care, made with conviction, not made with polls.

I do not need to take your pulse before I know my own mind. I do not reinvent myself at every turn. I am not running in borrowed clothes. When I act, you will know my reasons ...When I speak, you will know my heart.

I believe in tolerance, not in spite of my faith, but because of it.

I believe in a God who calls us, not to judge our neighbors, but to love them.

I believe in grace, because I have seen it ... In peace, because I have felt it ... In forgiveness, because I have needed it.

I believe true leadership is a process of addition, not an act of division. I will not attack a part of this country, because I want to lead the whole of it.

What about you, Mulder ? Will you lead or divide ?

So why is America the world cop? When you answer this question in a realistic fashion, you will understand the riddle.

Why does America have to control this problem? Why doesn't Japan or Mexico...Why do you advocate a NWO?

You are speaking utter nonsense here. Why does America have to control this problem? Again, it is in our national interests to do so. Further, it is due to leadership. The USA has the moral authority to do so as well as the military capability. No one else does. Trying to spread democracy throughout the world should not be something you should be ashamed of. The sooner we dismantle tyranical states, the better off we and the rest of the world shall be.

And what's up with the NWO gibberish? Just out of curiousity, since you love to throw the phrase around, just want is the NWO and what in the heck does it have to do with the war on terror?

Thanks!

And thanks for your clear reasoning, I share your views.

And well done to put arafat in prespective, I have been so outraged at how overtly he nourishes himself with the blood of Palistinean and Israeli citizens that I forgot that this vile little toad stands astride... Nothing, really. We need to allow Israeli forces to cleanse the stench of hatred and violence from their midst so that both Palistinean people and Israeli people can go about their lives in peace.

But you're quite right, we have bigger fish to fry.

"I have a question for you, POM-POM WAVING PRO GOVERNMENT TICK, why do you enjoy America fighting all these far-off wars that are not declared?"

Pro-government "tick"????

How rude.

And how untrue.

We do have a government and of all things it is responsible for the defense of this country against enemies, foreign and domestic. Surely it does more than it is supposed to do and certainly we who think it should do less have a responsibility to work to elect people who think similarly - IF WE CAN.

But, maybe you missed the fact that our government was attacked by people who were growing, thriving, and planning these attacks in Afghanistan and other terrorist havens around the world.

If you think we should not have done what has been done to destroy the terrorist camps and heirarchy and whatever else has been done to route the terrorists from Afghanistan - come up with a better plan.

So far, we are not directly involved in actions against Saddam Hussein. We do know that he is developing Chemical and biological and soon nuclear weapons to use against (likely) Israeli and likely American interests. The concern is that Saddam is also working - as is Iran - with the terrorists who did the Sept 11th attack - meaning that these terrorists could acquire some of Saddam's weapons and use them against Americans IN AMERICA or elsewhere. (There is nothing you or anybody can do to stop the fact that Americans do not just reside in our country but are all over the world working and living - termporarily - or traveling. Sorry.)

Chalk me up as another "pro-government tick" who thinks our President has every right, and every need, to be ready to do what is necessary to protect Americans and America! That is the FIRST reponsibility of any President and this "tick" is very very grateful that he and his administration are working night and day - even on his "time off" in that area.

That does not mean I agree with everything President Bush has done or does. But, for heaven's sake - HE IS THE PRESIDENT WE HAVE NOW and being so, he deserves my support and prayers. I will gladly give them. IN return, I pray for our nation every single day and for the protection and safety of our military and of our President and of all our citizens. What are YOU doing besides attacking people on this forum who admire this President?????

First of all, buck, I don't advocate a NWO, much to your chagrin. Secondly, the US and GB were the leaders in the alliance during the Gulf War. They were also the leaders in the UN treaty that was signed by Iraq at the end of the Gulf War. Now, without our leadership, Iraq woulud just drift into oblivion in the eyes of the world... and then, suddenly, pop up again when they launch an attack against Israel or anyone else they want. So as much as you want to believe that anyone who supports action against Iraq is a cheerleader for a NWO- it simply isn't so. It is simply enforcing a treaty that has been in violation for the past 8 years.

It truly sucks that the Bush Administration and GB have to clean up Clinton's mess. But, Buckeroo, if you want to slip into complacency like Clinton did, be my guest. Just don't start crying when Iraq attacks Israel.

Sheesh...you sound like a broken record.

Pssssst....you forgot to put in the NWO stuff too!

Maybe someone will answer your question when you answer one of ours. Answering a question with a question is not an answer.

I don't enjoy our government increasing my taxes on a daily basis while IT enjoins the "brotherhood of nations" to demolish our Constitution.

You seem to enjoy the fact that our government operates out of bound of the documents that give it power.

I've seen no proof that you are the Constitutional expert you claim to be. Assuming that there is no other way to interpret the Constitution other than your own is naive. From the beginnings of our great country, there has been honest debate about how to interpret what the Constitution really means, and that debate continues today.

(Some people are even mature enough to discuss it without hurling insults, and proclaiming the ignorance of those with whom they disagree.)

There is not a conservative alive, I would venture to guess, that does not believe that the government has grown far too large, but the practical aspects of how to scale it back and get it under control are not clear, and the task is daunting. Why don't you run for public office, or even the Presidency, if you are so sure you have all the answers?

"brotherhood of nations"

Is this code for NWO? Yeah right. That's why Bush rejected the Kyoto Accords, said NO to global UN taxes, said he will no longer fund UN foreign aid programs but rather that the US will fund our OWN foreign aid programs, and will not agree to the ICC.

A bit of specificity would help your argument, whatever it may be.

And no, I do not like our government operating "out of bound of the documents that gives it power." But I do like our government operating within the bounds with which it has been given its power by defending and protecting our citzenry from threats, both foreign and domestic.
