Irish rock star Bono, rapidly rising in the charts as a global aid advocate, won an endorsement Wednesday from a big fan, U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill.
During a press conference at a United Nations (news - web sites) conference on development aid, O'Neill sang Bono's praises for his work in promoting increased aid for the world's needy and said he looked forward to showing him Africa "through my eyes" next month.
The hugely successful leader of rock band U2 and the former business tycoon will visit Africa together next month to see firsthand how poverty and AIDS (news - web sites) have wreaked havoc on the continent.
Bono has become a tireless campaigner calling for wealthy nations to spend more on aid and now is nearly as much a fixture in the halls of political power as on stage.
O'Neill said he has earned his place.
"This is a person who's invested enough of his own time and energy to learn about and go see what life is like on the ground that he has my respect," O'Neill said. He said his talks with Bono had convinced him the rocker was "a serious person."
O'Neill wants to "especially go places where he (Bono) has been that he believes would be useful to my own understanding and I'm going to take him some places that I've been that he hasn't to let him see the world through my eyes.
"I think it will be useful for both us," the Treasury secretary said.
Two centuries of sending money to the dark continent hasn't produced one cent of improvement.
I wonder whether he will live in Africa?
Oh NO!
Like hell he will.
But........please feel sorry for AFRICANS (BLACK ONLY) AND GIVE YOUR MONEY.
You too= great group, but hypocrites.
And where are those so concerned about land mines? Sir Paul McCartney seems to have done a great job and befriended the USA in a way our own music community NEVER has, but where is his fiance, whose cause is land mines? Where is the crowd who pays for prime time TV ads to castigate the USA for not joining the world in signing some meaningless treaty on land mines that will only hamper the GOOD GUYS, like all treaties or, for example, gun laws---only the good guys follow the rules..DUH!!! Wouldn't it be a perfect time for them to spend their advertising budget and say STOP KILLING JEWS BY THE HUNDREDS PER WEEK as these innocents shop and eat pizzas and walk down the street?
Where is Barbra Streisand? Ted Dansing( (Spl?) Julia Roberts? And on and on...
They are silent.
As the Jews are slaughtered, these people are silent.
I grew up, a baby boomer, wondering how in hell there could have ever been a holocaust. How it could have happened. How people could have been silent.
Now I know.
(BTW...I am Christian, for those of you who do not know me.)
Are you serious? You mean which side are the media on between the side of Arafat/Pali and the side of Israel?
When I surf to a news channel, it's Fox. But sometimes I am subjected to a moment or two of something from CNN or MSNBC or the other guys.
The other day I heard one of them flogging a story about how some wonder if Peres' Nobel prize should be withdrawn or "taken back" or something since he supports Sharon. And, of course, no mention of ARAFAT'S Nobel!
