The only reasonable explanation is that the RC priesthood has "descended" into little more than a collection of gay bath houses and guys like Mahoney in LA, Egan in NY and the guy in Boston... forget his name...are the gay "house mothers" nurturing their stable of predators and providing them priviledged sanctuary to prey on the young, defenseless and innocent and destroy their lives. Well, Dr. Kopp, John Paul II promoted all three of these guys and, I suspect, he also knew that they were moving these predators around, given the testimony of Father Thomas Doyle.
