ATLANTA - In winning the school's first national basketball championship, the University of Maryland played a different kind of game last night than it had for most of the season.

Maryland was gritty, not pretty, in beating Indiana, 64-52, before a crowd of 53,406 at the Georgia Dome. Relying on defense down the stretch, as well as some clutch free-throw shooting, the Terrapins wore down a pesky bunch of Hoosiers before pulling away with a 16-5 run that sealed the game.

Was this the basketball game that was televised last night. The one where they brought out the WTC flag when the national anthem was played?

It's a free country and all but I noticed that as the TV camera panned across the players faces and around the crowd not one black person sang the national anthem. In fact, the players looked like they were pissed off. Maybe that was just their "game faces"?

As best I can tell many black Americans don't sing the national anthem. At least they didn't seem to be last night at that game. What's up with that?

This year, everything has come together

You can say that again.... After they blew Duke off the floor a few weeks ago, this ending seemed almost probable..

Congrats to Gary Williams et al.

Maryland did itself proud, and helped cement the state's standing as the second-dumbest in the Union, with the riots in College Park. Way to go Terps.

lol, some people will always find a way to pissup a tree, but it always comes back to shine on you.

Unfortunately, this happens everywhere now - even wholesome Indiana did it last night on a loss. Sorry your team didnt make it.

Talk about a red-letter day! O's maul Yanks in Season Opener and Terps win the title.

I must say, however, that the kids down in College Park really need to get a grip on these celebrations.....

Hehe. Ah yes, a Clintonian "everyone does it" defense. Well, then I withdraw my disgust.

...Sorry your team didnt make it.

Actually, Maryland is my team (after my alma mater, Virginia). I live here now, and have attended some graduate classes there. It is a beautiful campus. Which makes my disgust at the Maryland students' bahavior that much more intense. Should we not hold ourselves to higher standards?

Interesting psychology though, the accusation of sour grapes. You sound almost like a liberal democrat.

sour grapes, nah, WE ARE THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS -- just identifying shootin it up a tree when I see it.

Now that the news is out, how about commenting on the reality as reported after all the hype of a "riot" at Maryland....there were 15 arrested NONE WERE MD STUDENTS!!!

At Indiana over 30 were arrested...where are all of the Md bashers to correct their reporting (that's what we demand of the liberal media.
