I could be a smart@$$ and say that the FREEP is becoming more like the Fed every week. You know, it wasn't broke so they brought in a repairman...

Oh, this blows big time. I though it was my hangover, but, I see I am not alone in disliking this.

There is just one question I would like to ask:
Why?
What was wrong with the old FR format? This defeats the whole point of FR: Quick and easy scan of every news item available in an easy to read and customizable community. Now it is just a, well, a... website.
Here are some tips to make it usable until they make all the fluff go away:
In your browser preferences, turn off style sheets. That will make the tiny fonts behave normally again. Then deselect "allow page-specified colors and fonts" or whatever your browser calls those options (for Netscape it is "use my fonts (colors) overriding page fonts/colors." That will make the flag go away (God I never thought I would say that!) Select a nice light graphite background color and a font you like.
It is sad that I will have to change my browser configuration every time I visit Free Republic. I will be interested in how much $$ they collect in the next freepathon.

I am not happy. Even with a cable modem it is very, very slow. I got the breaking news to show up at the right side but the column is way too narrow. It is hard on the eyes and I can't find anything.
I simply created links on my browser's toolbar to all the
forums I wish to view, and the only forums I "subscribe" to and have shown on the FR sidebar are News/Current Events and Breaking News.........
It works rather well............

There are too many "specialized" areas. It looks like the DU now. We were always one united family even if we debated among ourselves. Now we are forced to chose our separate forums. A house divided cannot stand. Why force division?? This is crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!FREEP THE FR!

The old format was a unique and necessary outlet to rally our brother and sisterhood against the dangerous onslaught of liberal Clintonites attempting to take over America through lies and elitism. I joined the Free Republic shortly after Gore's attempted coup because I was attracted to the thought of 80,000 like minded individuals uniting together to literally save our nation. Today, this site has taken on the look of commercialism and separatism. It has lost its mission,comradory, and uniqueness. The liberals have won as we our destroying ourselves. I guess they are celebrating at the DU. Its a damn shame.

After looking that the new system a bit more, I think a lot of the problem could be alleviated by moving the left column to the top of the page.
Even if it took up the top 1/3 of the screen when getting on initially, you would have more room on the right for 'breaking news' and more room for the article titles. Plus, you would immediately scroll past it when looking at articles. JMO!

I should have posted this when there were still less than 100 replies, but I wanted to give the new format a chance. Well, after a day of this, I don't like it. It's annoying to repeatedly have to log in after crashes or re-boots. I also don't think it's very user friendly. It reminds me of another forum (sports) that I used to participate in. The host redesigned the site just about every month. After the 4th or 5th time I quit going. It just got too frustrating. I tend to prefer minimalism when surfing- I want things simple, fast and uncomplicated. This isn't.

This new forum is not very user friendly, just because something can be done does not make it the right thing to do……it’s to busy and requires constant user attention. I liked this place best when I could just come here to relax and read.
Please administrators; either a right side bar of a left, having both is a curse. Well I guess I’ll have to experiment with the options and see if I can get that old FR look back……this serves me right for not complaining about the right side bar during its debut.
