Sadly, more than likely true. In 1968, a soldier from my hometown in South Georgia was killed in Vietnam. A black soldier served as a pall bearer. While in town, he was refused entrance to a local "whites only" restaurant. Believe you me, this made an impression on a 12 year old and a lot of other people. From that time on, our family did not frequent the door of that establishment. BTW, my parents were Republican (another oddity in South Georgia in 1968) and not at all liberal, just human.

I disagree...I believe there are those that truely did not realize what predjudice was. If they were raised either only around a caucasian environment, they would not have a clue and if their parents were not racist it would not be an issure....besides I am still shocked to realize predjudice is still taking place today. I feel silly that I dont know, but since I do not feel disrespectful feeling toward others, it completely escapes me. I think there would be those that do not realize.

I thought the movie was great. It was a movie I couldn't watch without emotion.

I never been in a war situation, but that doesn't mean I don't understand death, fear, loyalty and pain.

Show Our Vets You care. Very few American's our helping our Vets with money.

Disabled Vets and Veteran's of Foreign Wars are two organizations I always give money to, even if it's only $10.00. The last letter I got from the VFW said that only 3% of American's help our Vets.

If this movie meant anything to You, at least send the Vets the cost of a movie.

Peace

...In the Spirit of Easter, in my call into the General during today's ..The Judicial Watch Radio Show.., I shared how I heard of a Christian Minister who was so moved when he saw .."WE WERE SOLDIERS".. that he vowed to lead his Church the way MOORE lead his men to Victory at Landing Zone X-Ray/IA DRANG-1965.

...It was a Wonderful Radio Show today honoring our country's Heroes ..past -&- present.

I want to ask if he really expects us to believe that in 1964 people were still so sheltered
and stupid that they wouldnt realize that "whites only" sign at a laundromat meant
that blacks werent welcome.

I will be dating myself...but my recollection is that our schools in my hometown
in Oklahoma were not integrated until 1965, when I got into the fourth grade.

I also recollect a trip to visit the family of my Mom's sister in Huntsville, Alabama...probably
in 1967. As we crossed Mississippi and some of the other states, I was awed by the
"shotgun shacks" along the roads. I could hardly believe people lived in them.

I don't remember (as a child) overt discrimination to blacks at that time, but my
gut tells me there surely must have still been some harsh covert discrimination.

I got to visit Mississippi in 1997. It was a new world...decent homes
(some probably pre-fab) had replaced the shotgun shacks.

BTW, my parents were Republican (another oddity in South Georgia in 1968) and not at all liberal, just human.

As conservative Jewish commentator Dennis Prager says "there are two races of humans:
the decent and the indecent".
You were lucky; your parents were members of the decent race.
