Hey, like I said, I don't watch the "new" Rush Limbaugh (O'Reilly). I see that, reading thru the thread, Knight didn't show up. So what. I'd be p.o.'ed too having seen Duke rooked just so the "powers that be" could promo my replacement at PCU, oops, I mean IU.

Good points. Coach Davis owes a lot to Coach Knight. Even if there is some bad history between them. I bet some of the players will publicly thank Knight this weekend. Hope Davis has the class to do so also, or would that offend new best-buddy Brand?

Are you claiming there is a conspiracy to have IU win the national championship?

That said, Torre clearly gets his team ready to play their best ball in October

Pretty easy job, when you're loaded with Veteran talent, And a level of said talent, that doesn't work up a sweat winning 100 games. Thanx, George!

That's pretty good form for that chair throw, good follow through.
I believe if you look at his later chair throw it doesn't have the same elan as this one.

Considering that he is the most successful coach over the last 30 years that's quite a mouthful. Second most successful is probably Coach K: trained by Knight, and also possessor of a foul temper much of the time.

I wouldn't put Knight at the top, but in terms of on the court success he's obviously in the top 5 (which is close enough so as to make your claim valid).

Guess he could have been more successful if he just mellowed out, huh?

Yes, I believe he would have been more successful. As I said earlier, Knight can coach X's and O's with the best of them (or perhaps better than the rest). But as far as managing a team over an entire season he could stand some improvement - and that's been pretty evident for most of the 1990s. One could see that his teams were beaten down by March, and had very little energy to bring to the tournament. Some teams respond positively to a coach who keeps his thumb down on them all season; but those teams are in the minority.

Lots of people buy into the media hype about Knight. I followed IU for 30 years and became a Texas Tech fan this year. Watch in a couple of years and see where the two programs are.

I will. That's part of the fun of making predictions like these, isn't it? I don't buy into media hype so much as I've taken a look at the facts on record and drawn some conclusions. Based on those conclusions I predict Knight will experience moderate success at TT (first and second round NCAA showings). His technical expertise will help him field competitive teams, but his overbearing team management will prevent his teams from going deep into the tournament.

Of course, no matter how much success he has at Texas Tech, there will be those helpful sideline coaches telling him how it should be done.

Well, it remains to be seen how successful he'll be. But you're right, sideline coaches will always exist.

You seem to have missed the most glaring, and biggest factor. His overbearing team management will not affect how deep his team goes. Trying to recruit Blue Chip Players to Lubbock, Texas will. Getting Todays top shelf, pampered spoiled athlete to Commit,to going to Lubbock, is a recruiters worst Nightmare.

Or at least come close; yes.

I saw the same thing when the palming Magic Johnson's team was "officiated" to a national championship over Bird and Indiana State about 20 years ago. BB games are real easy to control by the zebras.

The closest I've been to Lubbock was College Station, so I really can't comment on it. But I can see where it would be difficult to recruit against the other Big 12 teams. Knight probably had more local Indiana boys dreaming of playing at IU than he will an Texas. So you're right, recruiting is certainly a huge factor.

I simply call 'em as I see 'em. I am not a big Dook fan; I just hate to see the game degraded.

Actually, we have said around here the last few years that maybe Coach needed to change jobs. The administration was obviously out to remove him, and did everything it could to take the fun out of his job.

As to your coaching comments:

Plays every game likes it's the championship game: True, he can be like that. That intensity is why the '75-'76 team went undefeated. But maybe that era has passed.

Wears his team down so by March they have no spirit left: That is belied by both '81 and '87. Neither team was highly regarded throughout the year, but started playing their best ball the last part of Big 10 season, and through the NCAAs. OK, he didn't do this every year, or not lately at all. But finishing this strong twice seems to make a statement that he could bring teams to a higher level.

Well, 20 years ago I was 9 years old and not living in the states... So, I didn't watch that game :) Maybe I should tune into ESPN Classic though...

All I can add to this conversation is that if you think that officials cheat, you are wrong. They may be inept, horrible, blind, whatever, but they don't cheat.
