I believe the mentally disabled are subjected to sexual abuse continually and such abuse is not limited to Catholic Priests. However, there is no excuse for Priests to engage in sexual misconduct.

My father owned a service business back in the 1960's and he had a California State Hospital on contract for regular monthly service. One of his service representatives came back to the office one afternoon with a report that he had seen two hospital orderlies having sex with a mentally retarded female patient. Needless to say, there was a 'flap up' about the incident and an investigation by the hospital.

I respectfully suggest that an investigation of mental health facilities would find such problems are rather wide-spread.

Yes, sadly, these problems are widespread, but what makes this scandal so vile is the way the higher-ups in the Catholic Church aided and abetted these predators. It makes me sick when I see some bishop in his "holy suit" on TV going on about what a tragedy this is and how much the Church cares about the victims. Puke! They only care now that everyone knows about it. For years they bullied and silenced the victims and knowingly put these men in situations where they knew it would happen again. The bishops and anyone else who looked the other way while children and others were being horribly abused, ought to be publicly horse-whipped. These men are as vile as the perpetrators.
