Poles seek closer links with Israel
By Yossi Melman
Poland's government wants to increase cooperation with the Mossad, says Mark Siwiec, head of the Polish National Security Bureau, who is currently visiting Israel. Siwiec will meet today with Mossad head Ephraim Halevy, and also with Foreign Minister Shimon Peres.
Speaking with Ha'aretz, Siwiec said Poland's security services have "a relationship of trust and cooperation with Israel's Mossad and security services, but we are looking to strengthen it."
The Polish National Security Bureau head reports directly to his country's president. Among other duties, Siwiec is responsible for coordinating civilian and military intelligence work in his country.
During the visit to Israel, Siwiec met with Minister Dan Meridor, National Security Council head Major General Uzi Dayan, and senior officials from the Prime Minister's Office and the Foreign Ministry. He also visited plants belonging to Israel Aircraft Industries and the Ramael Armament Development Authority.
During his talks, Siwiec emphasized that the need for intelligence and security cooperation between Israel and Poland has intensified following the Sept. 11 attacks. Without giving specific details, he noted that officials in his country have in recent months passed information to the U.S. on terror suspects who have resided or passed through Poland.
