But the fact that we supported the ISI, bin Laden, and the Taleban and paid for the training camps, etc. during the war with the Soviets is hardly a secret. It's well documented in Bodansky's book, and no doubt others. And it was no secret going in that the ISI was in large part loyal to bin Laden.

I don't doubt that what he was covering got him killed, but it was a whole lot deeper than just the revelation that the ISI and Pakistan have been a hotbed of terrorists for years. Or that they made their living exporting heroin.

The article also emphasizes that Pearl was investigating any U.S. role in supporting the Islamist terrorists and their ISI allies. That role is much less well known, and may have been what got Pearl killed.

The taliban didnt exist when the soviets were in Afghanistan.
