He usually plays a good guy and was able to totally transform himself for this one role and do it wonderfully. That showed what a great actor he is and thus cemented his victory. Having said that, I still say that he should have won best actor for "Remember the Titans" 2 years ago.

You're right- some of the best acting jobs are when an actor plays a character that goes against his image or prior roles. I recall actors like Ray Milland winning when they went against type.
