I like Denzel too. It's unfortunate that he won for this role. Denzel is erudite and has a high polish ... believing he is a "street black" is about as credible as when Cary Grant played a "bum".

he did a great job as a liquored up recluse from society that
falls in love with Leslie Caron.

I agree with you though about not seeing Denzel Washington
as an innercity "street" detective.
