1) Are they using a "soft lens" for his close-ups?

2) Does anyone else think its lame when a nominated song is actually titled the same as the movie or has lyrics that include the movie's name? Exception: "To Sir With Love"

Soft lens, probably. Randy Newman is legally blind, BTW...
