Tom Green's 'Freddy Got Fingered' Named Worst Film Of The Year

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) — Tom Green needs all five fingers to count the number of movie booby-prizes he received for ``Freddy Got Fingered.''

His much-reviled comedy was named worst picture of last year on Saturday at the Golden Raspberry Awards, an annual spoof held on the eve of the Academy Awards.

Green also was chosen as worst actor and director for ``Freddy Got Fingered,'' shared the worst screenplay award with co-writer Derek Harvie and was cited for worst screen couple — ``Tom Green and any animal he abuses.''

Green became the first actor in the 22-year history of the ``Razzies'' to show up at the group's ceremony to collect his prizes — gold-painted, raspberry-shaped trophies whose materials include lids from iced tea jars, Super-8mm film reels and wood-grain shelf paper.

Razzies founder John Wilson said the awards cost $4.79 each and that he ``made them the other day on my patio.''

``I'd just like to say to all the other nominees in the audience, I don't think that I deserve it anymore than the rest of you,'' Green said as he accepted the worst picture award. ``I'd like to say that. I don't think that it would be true, though.''

Green, dressed in a tuxedo, rode up in a 1960-era luxury car, stepped out of the back and then rolled a length of cheap red carpet to walk on as he entered a magic shop with a small theater used for the awards.

Mariah Carey was dishonored as worst actress for ``Glitter.'' The singer's cleavage also had been nominated for worst screen couple, running second in that category to Green, whose antics included a lewd act involving a horse.

The Razzies are chosen by the group's 520 members.

For worst picture, ``Freddy Got Fingered'' handily out-polled Sylvester Stallone's ``Driven,'' Carey's ``Glitter,'' the war epic ``Pearl Harbor'' and Kevin Costner's ``3000 Miles to Graceland,'' Wilson said.

Green ``set out to make something stupid and offensive. It's got bestiality, incest, child abuse. Uggh,'' Wilson said. ``If it is an intentionally bad movie, it is the `Citizen Kane' of intentionally bad movies.''

The only other Razzies winner ever to show up to collect his award was ``Showgirls'' director Paul Verhoeven.

Other Razzies ``winners'':

— Worst supporting actor: Charlton Heston, ``Cats & Dogs,'' ``Planet of the Apes'' and ``Town & Country.''

— Worst supporting actress: Estella Warren, ``Driven'' and ``Planet of the Apes.''

— Worst remake or sequel: ``Planet of the Apes.''

Never saw it. Could it be that bad?

He was funny (as the campus tour guide) in Road Trip. I think the problem starts when he writes his own material. He's more weird than funny.

Road Trip was funny.

The Tom Green show was funny too.

Some of the scenes on The Tom Green Show had me in tears.

I missed that one also. This is why I am so careful about paying to see a movie. My wife and I went to see "Lord of the Rings" Friday night and cost $6.75 apiece + $7.50 for popcorn and coke. I cannot see spending that kind of cash to see a lousy movie.

"Some of the scenes on The Tom Green Show had me in tears."

I hate him. I have to change the channel whenever his smug face appears.

If I ruled the Universe, he'd be sodomized by zoo gorillas, repeatedly, live, 24/7.

Me too! It was strange--I would be laughing so hard I could not breath and yet I was thinking: "That's not funny, it's stupid. This is retarded. What am I laughing at?" All the while convulsively laughing to the point of almost falling down. His comedy (on the Tom Green Show) makes me kind of schizo that way.

I have to say, my respect for the guy went up after I heard he showed up to accept the award in person. If only everyone else in Hollywood had a sense of humor about themselves..

Agreed. Everyone in Hollywood takes themselves Ssssssooooooooooo seriously as if what they do is Ssssooooooooooooo important. When, in fact, it would be hard to imagine anyone else on earth whose contribution to the world is less significant.

Tom Green is a pathetic, no-talent, hack who is desparately seeking any attention he can get (very much like Michael Moore). He confirmed that opinion for me when he was guesting on SNL and kept trying to tongue-kiss his dad (his parents were both in the audience). Showing up to get this award once again demonstrates his infantile need for attention.

It's what the critics call the Curse of the Farrelly Brothers: ever since Kingpin and Something About Mary(both very good movies), many have tried to copy their brand of gross-out humor and comedic wit, all unsuccessfully. Good American comedies are few and far between.

I can't say that I disagree with you. My point in posting this story was to highlighte the Razzies, which provides a nice alternative to the Oscars, which accentuates Hollywood's smug self-importance to a nauseating degree.

I think the Razzies should be televised and the Oscars relegated to page 12 of the Entertainment section.

Have to disagree on them both being very good movies, adequate entertainment with bits of belly laughs thrown in for good measure only. Had to wince too many times watching them.

Unfortunately I have to agree with the award to Charlton Heston. Time to retire from acting, Chuck, and stick to the NRA fulltime.

Tom Green is as funny as Ray J. Johnson, and has none of the former's staying power. Unless Drew Barrymore can hook him up, he'll be parking cars within a year. And if the fleet's in, she'll probably be too busy to help much.

Here's a link to a piece that's two years old, but still relevant, I think.

He lost his testicles to cancer, lost his show to low ratings, lost his house when it burned down ( he was saved by to barking of a mutt he just adopted) and lost his wife Drew Barrymore to her lesbian girlfriend.

I found his show hysterical.
