[history]
Once you've seen and listened to Rusty Yates on TV's talk shows, it's not hard to see why so many women want to lynch him. This column was going to comment on the social and psychiatric issues raised by the Yates case and guilty verdict. But the case itself--with its arguments over psychosis and major depression--seems intellectually austere compared with trying to explain the psychopathologies of American television. For me the Yates story landed on another planet Monday evening when, while surfing the cable waves, what should roll in but Larry King interviewing Rusty Yates. Isn't he supposed to be in mourning, or something similar?

It's a subset of pornography. But what the presumably real pornographers do on the Playboy Channel seems almost earnestly innocent by comparison. Yep, he's right.

I wondered why none of Andrea Yates' close relatives were in the courtroom with her when she was sentenced. Seems pretty cold. As for the hubby, every woman I've heard talk about the case wants him charged also, for neglect, if nothing worse.

And the real pornographers on The Playboy Channel don't include scenes with five small children being murdered.

People say, you don't have to watch this stuff. That won't let you pretend it isn't happening. This is a good insight too. As a side note, so far Daniel looks like an excellent replacement for Paul Gigot on the Journal's Friday editorial page.

Except that Gigot was the best Capitol Hill analyst the WSJ had in years. Much missed.

This guy Henninger is smart, and he writes well.

My husband said that if he were our son and had left our grandchildren in the hands of an obviously psychotic woman (I mean he apparently tried to have her committed THAT WEEK), he might just take him out himself for his negligence.

Not to mention that he has since said that he is not sure that he will remain married to Andrea and is not sure how much he will visit her ... he wants to remarry and have more children!!!
