Ahh, the Associated Press.... the Voice of the Enemy. Wonder when they'll be moving permanently to the European Fraternal Socialist Union, so they can join their comrades. The idiots there who actually THINK this qualifies as "news" must have all of the brain activity of an eggplant on crack...

Both countries "have nuclear weapons," Mr. Usman says. "Why not beauty queens?"

Well, that settles it for me! She's the next Miss Earth, as well as winning the Miss Intensive Logic and Reasoning.

Esther Swan, a spokeswoman for the Miss Universe pageant, says would-be entrants who are Muslim often ask if they can skip the swimsuit segment. "They usually bow out" when they hear they can't, she says.

What, no discrimination lawsuits?!?

Mr. Usman also is organizing two male beauty pageants, Mr. Earth Quest and Mr. Pakistan Manhunt. He says "men in Speedos" are far easier for Muslims to accept than females in swimsuits.

My, my, my... isn't THIS telling... Osama, you want a pin-up calendar with Britney Spears or Barney Frank photos?

What problem do these folks have with the female body? Something is not quite normal here, that female bodies are seen as something evil.

I can't figure it out. They don't educate women in many of those countries. College education is out of reach for women in some of the Mid Eastern countries so the women come to USA for college. Women are forced to ride in back seat of cars and in back of buses... yet the men want 42 virgins to attend to them in heaven and they want multiple wives... I cannot figure out their way of thinking. But I have a lovely daughter who is my precious angel and I would never want her to go live over there. I also have two sons, and I can't figure out where the idea that males are better than females comes from. She is just as smart and wonderful as her brothers are. She thinks Calculus and Physics are EASY! Seems to me that only men who are insecure about their own masculinity treat women as inferior to them.

The grand mufti also proposed staging a Miss Morality contest that would showcase "the woman who adheres to righteous principles best,"

And the swimsuit in that case would be? Rubber Burqha? Or just two skimpy bands of dynamite sticks?

Maybe males in Speedos are accepted far easier because homosexual behavior seems to be one of Islam's worst kept secrets.

Does anyone have a link to the Afghani "homo" thread from a couple of months ago?

I'm sorry that 3# zirconium tiara just screams cheap. Now the one Celine Dion had on in yesterday's thread was a TIARA to be proud of, she could bearly hold her head up. OK OK I have tiara envy. Flame away.

...Instead, judges were told to guess if contestants had "nice healthy bodies" beneath their roomy tunic-and-trouser shalwar kameez costumes, says Muhammed Usman, the contest's chief organizer.

LOL-what diaper-head logic could call this a beauty conest which is supposed to relate to -i guess-'universally accepted' notions of beauty....am i nuts when i think physical appearance shouldn't be taboo in a beauty contest?

Advice from the Mulla:

Why do Muslim women shun wearing bikinis or take part in beauty pageants?

Nowadays more and more ‘liberated’ women the world over are wailing about women being treated as sex objects. They cite activities at bars, restaurants and other outlets, even fashion shows and beauty-pageants, as places where men go to watch women baring breasts or parading in swim-suites and other scanty outfits.

Reporter Ms C. Shantheni ( a non-Muslim), who attended a fashion show at the lounge of a five-star hotel in Singapore, expressed her sentiments against the almost all-men guests who ogled at the girls ‘wearing skimpy swimsuits’.

Writing in a column ‘My World’ in The New Paper, she says: “ I object to a woman being viewed entirely as an object. A sex object. I object to a flesh show. A show where clothes carry little weight and what is sought is the boy that shows them off.”

Here is an example of how some women bare themselves or dress sexily in live shows for men. They also allow themselves to be photographed in the nude or partially nude for magazines and movies. They themselves would not mind being treated as (sex) objects for the sake of money and fame. In other words, religious discipline and teachings of how sinful it is to bare the body or to dress scantily or sexily to show off their beautiful bodies is needed.

Women wearing scantily or sexily can also be the cause of sexual crimes. An article in the Straits Times, entitled “Women in sexy clothes face higher sex-crime risk: Report”, mentions ‘that the clothes women wore might send signals to men that increased the risk of sex crimes … nearly 90 per cent of the psychiatrists polled in the article agreed that parents, who wished to minimize the risk of sex crimes, should consider what their daughters were wearing and how that might be interpreted by males.’

A man, upon seeing a scantily or sexily dressed woman, would seldom jump on her immediately to commit a molest or rape crime. But such sights (in person or from the mass media) could stir up sexual feelings in him and unconsciously ‘storing’ them up in his mind. He might even entertain some sexual fantasies in his mind. The ‘pent up’ feelings or imagination in him might build up to an eventual ‘release’ later on in the form of some criminal offence when the opportunity arises. This ‘release’ might not always be in the form of rape and molestation but also through such ventures as going to the prostitutes and bars, or even initiating sexual activities with one’s girlfriend or other sexual misbehaviors, leading to unpleasant consequences.

All these crimes, sexual ventures and misbehavior, of course, depend on the conscience and spiritual standing of the man, the ‘weaker’ he is, the easier he succumbs to the them.

A Muslim woman, who keeps away from wearing bikinis and other sexy clothes, is merely following the Commands of God that she should ‘lower her gaze and guard her modesty and not display her beauty’. (24:31). If by the flaunting of her body – by wearing bikinis, mini-skirts, blouses with plunging necklines, skintight clothing, etc – a man’s sexual desire is aroused, the woman earns a sin (demerit point). (And the man who ogles at her also earns a sin.)

Thus, this Islamic prohibition is meant not only to guard the weaker sex but also to guard the spiritual good of the stronger sex.

It should be remembered that it is easier for a woman to arouse the sexual feeling of a man (by just uncovering some parts of her body) than the other way round. Hence, a greater restriction is imposed on women in the way they dress. The believing woman who truly understands the implication of the Command of God regarding modesty would not hesitate to dress modestly.

"Miss Earth? What is going on? Is this the same pageant that use to be Miss World or another one? And didn't there used to be a Miss Universe pageant?"

I think they all still exist. Will 200 channels available, these pageants are all about putting on a three hour TV event for sale to the highest bidder. Cheap original programming is scarce, but beauty pageant contestants don't have to be paid, the winners usually get prizes from sponsors instead of cash. Compared to a movie, TV drama or sitcom, pageants cost very little to produce.
