SACRAMENTO -- A Senate committee Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Gov. Gray Davis' closest energy adviser, S. David Freeman, to lead the state power authority, but not without intense scrutiny of the nominee by an Orange County senator.

Sen. Ross Johnson, R-Irvine, laid into Freeman on a number of issues, including Freeman's late reporting of his financial interests in energy companies and the high price of the energy contracts he negotiated last spring.

David is, in my opinion, a show boat, not a good leader or careful student of the power industry.

Freeman last year inked contracts to lower energy prices from 30 cents per kilowatt-hour to 7 cents. Now his goal is 5 cents a kilowatt- hour.

Let's look at Freemans past performance, when he was in charge of the LA Dept. of Water and Power. Oops! He was gouging Californians for almost 30 cents per KWH when he had the opportunity.

From Myths About the Power Crisis, March 3, 2001:

the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power [under the control of David Freeman]...has made $240 million in the last 18 months selling surplus electricity to the California power grid.

From Power failures : The Top 10 myths about the state's electricity crisis August 27, 2001:

Evil Texans "gouged" us. Gov. Davis charged, "We're in a war with generators that are trying to bleed us dry. They're trying to ship every dime out of our state and back to Houston, Texas." In fact, Texans sold less than 10 percent of the power used in California. Prices charged to Californians were $146 to $240 per megawatt hour for energy bought from Texas and other states, but $292 from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power [Under David Freeman] and $330 from the Sacramento Municipal Utility District.

The real "gouging" was done not by private firms, but by city-run utilities who had excess power simply because they were exempt from the restructuring provisions that applied to the regulated utility companies.

I just browsed thru the thread:

Power failures : The Top 10 myths about the state's electricity crisis

Not much has changed with Gov Davis, and his supporters.
They are still blocking the generation or transportation of electricity and trying to blame others for their actions!

I think I saw where Simon was attacking Davis on his energy policies.
I will see if that article has been posted.
