Need help please from 'puter experts.
TOPICS: Miscellaneous
KEYWORDS: addinghdtont; dualboot
My son recently gave me Windows 2000 (WINNT 5.0), which allows dual system boots.
I'd like to take my HD with Windows 98 on it, already formatted and set up with all the programs I have there, and its slave HD, and add those HDs to the 2000 system.
Is there any easy way to integrate the old system without having to reinstall the programs to the new system?
I ask this because when I added the other HD, with programs on it, I had to reinstall the previously addressed programs, since none of them was listed in the new registry.

Here is a third-party boot software that's free called
boot us. I use this dual boot on my computer for XP Pro and Red-Hat 7.2.; It works great for me.

I've read here that a program called "moose cheese" will work for you.

Partition Magic has a utility for setting up a dual boot system.

You can easily install WIN 2000 over Win98. There are two options: 1) install it over Win98, which is what I would do, since it will configure itself so that you don't have to re-install most applications; 2) install it in a different directory that standard "WINDOWS", (which is probably where Win98 is). This will allow you to boot either Win98 or Win2000. While that sounds good, you will have to re-install all of your applications to get them to work under Win2000.
Option 1 is preferable for another reason. Win2000 is so much more stable than Win98, you will never want to run Win98 again.

If you are adding a new HD, partition it, give a drive letter, and format it. Then boot into Win98, let Win98 recognize the new HD. Then install Win2K. When chosing a directory for install, choose the new HD. Let Win2K install there. That should prompt you to create a dual boot. From that point, you will have the ability to boot into either system.
You cannot just "move" programs to Win2K. They have to be re-installed there.

I use System Commander. I was able to partition and boot 98, NT4, and Linux.
One trick is to have a partition that all three (or two in your case) partition that is accessible by all OSes.
I had two, one for the common apps, and a document partition.
Saved some space on Office, but that was with a 8G drive.
(And the 3 OSes.)
Still had to install for both 98 and NT.

STOP! Don't listen to these rookie knuckleheads. If your bios allows you to tell it which hd to boot to then all you have to do is add the hd with the master/slave jumpers in the correct positions then when you want to boot to 98 change the bios to boot to that hd. When you want to boot to NT change the bios to boot to the hd that contains NT. Simple AND effective. Getting into bios you usually have to press the DEL key on the very first page of bootup. If you have compaq or dell or some other proprietary machine then it is probably F10 but the user's manual should tell you that. Bios names = Award, AMI ( American Megatrends ) and Phoenix.

Why in world would you boot into your BIOS every time you boot up, if Win2K/Win98 will gladly create a dual boot menu for you?

So when you boot to BIOS, choose another HD to boot off of, it creates a MBR on that drive?
