They were both Marines, but I think that Lee Marvin got the Purple Heart at Saipan and not the Navy Cross at Iwo.

As for Captain Kangaroo, can't you tell he was a Marine by his haircut?

Later, there was also a 'toon version, IIRC.

And now after all these years, I learn the Captain was a Jarhead, even if not a WW-II combat vet. But I'm not surprised about it either.
